20" storm wheels arrrived - tyres too small?? HELP |
|
I received the 20" Range Rover storm wheels today. Put them on the vehicle and they look too small. I rang the supplier and questioned the tyre size 275/40/20, and he was sure that is the correct tyre size for disco 3 20"wheels. But they dont come in 20" from factory so how would he know? I would aasume that the rolling circumference should be the same, which it is not. (its 8% smaller than standard)
I told him that I thought they were too small, and he disagreed. So I took it for a drive to test them and the speedo is out by 8kph. When my speedo says Im doing 110, Im actually doing 102. (wife followed in new Calais which has accurate speedo) I did approxamtly 20kms on them and called him back and now he dosen't think he can exchange them???
I kept my cool and gave him the option of:
Taking them back and fitting 295/45/20 tyres or a full refund. The other issue is the speed rating is not even right. The tyre has 106W on it and the disco3 has a minimum of 110H, V.
Do you think he has an obligation to provide the tyres with the correct speed rating, and exchange the tyres for the correct rating and similar rolling circumference as the factory 18's which is 295/45/20
What should I do? Advise would be good

What did you actually order. Has he supplied what you asked him to or did you rely on his expertise as a Tyre/Wheel supplier. if the later then he should replace.
I had a similar problem a year or so ago when a trye/wheel supplier was adament that 16inch wheels would fit
Obvisously they dont, which he found out to his cost after buying them all in and trying to fit them. I went a long with it just to prove a point.
slightly different in your case though. I would push for replacement rather than a refund, I think you will get more chance of a resolution Duncan

I assumed he knew what he was on about as he sells LR and RR wheels. He said that he sells that combination for Disco3 all the time. Stupidly, I didnt even think to question the size of the tyres. When illoked at my invoice he actually put 275/45/20 (which would have been better) but i received 275/40/20, I didnt notice they were small until I put them on and then did a tyre size comparison below

Will over/under size tyre invalidate insurance/warranty. If so i would challenge him on that as well Duncan

He should change the tyres.
An online calculator that will give you pretty much precise calculations to back up your arguement , diameter , radius , circumference , difference in speed etc http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Good Luck !

If it's based on his recommendation, then it's his responsibility especially when you checked with him before driving on them.
And at 106, you're likely to end up with more punctures that you'd want..... not to mention invalidated insurance for under rated tyres.... Bodsys Brake Bible

Hey nickski - he has a legal obligation if he advertised / advised that the wheels & tyres were for a D3. Dunno your specific circumstances but if he confirmed as such - stick to your guns & threaten him with consumer affairs if need be. cheers Ian TDV6 HSE (2006 - ARB BullBar, UHF, Sat-Nav, GG AT2's, roof racks, full of fishing gear, kids cra#, and red nail polish on passenger seat from wife painting nails while offroad)

Thanks for all your advise. I intend on sending the wheels and tyres back tomorrow even if he disagrees. I also believe he has sent the wrong tyres for the vehicle. I didnt ask for that size, and he has put them on the rims and they dont meet the Disco3 standard. (weight and speed mimium). I could also tell him that the invoice didnt match the tyres.

hope it all works out nickski. I have been eyeing the same company you purchased from for a set of the very same 'street' wheels. let us know how it goes. I have had similar discussions with my insurance mobs regarding tyre fitments. Basically, the load limit must be met, the speed rating can be less than the tyre placard so long as the rating meets or exceeds the 110k rating...logic...you are only allowed to travel at 110 max in all but the territory, where you may need to use a higher rating if intending to travel at the 130K limit available there.
Plus fitments require a lower profile but also a wider tread to maintain overall diameter.

The only information or advice that I can offer is that the correct tyre size for Land Rover 20†rims, as fitted to a RRS is 275/40 20.
This is the tyre size fitted by Land Rover in the factory on their 20†Stormer or 20†V-Spoke rims. But as the Disco 3 is not supplied by LR with 20†rims, or even have them listed as an option, there would be no manufacturer recommend tyre size for a D3 with 20†rims.
So, in effect, you’re tyre centre is correct in saying that 275/40 20 is the tyre size for the Stormer rims. The issue is that you’re putting the Stormers on a D3 rather than a RRS.
Now many members on here have fitted 20†Stormers & V-spokes to their D3’s, some using OEM & other using copy rims & the tyre size 295/45 20 seems to feature a lot.
(Which BTW is a tyre size that does not fit on a RRS on OEM Stormers, as I found out.)
But you must remember you are putting on a wheel / tyre combination that is not recommended by Land Rover for use on the D3. So there could be insurance and or warranty issues down the road.
It could be a sticky one, as the 275/40 tyre is the correct size for the rim !
