Multi Height towbar repair/question. |
|
Hi folks, Ive got a mega problem. I purchased a used multi height towbar off ebay and thought that I'd been sold a pup, ie a different towbar. I could not for the life in me get the bar to lock into place. SO, like a moron I grinded the locking pin down until it fitted. It was then that I realised my incrediable B s UP.
Now the the towbar locks into place O.K but the locking pin is around 1 inch shorter than normal. I'm not able to pull the towbar out and it seems lock in, but is it safe? Can I buy a replacment pin? or do I need to replace the whole item. At the moment my wife has witheld my housekeeping money until I sort this S***y mes out. (her wordss not mine). The force is strong with this one ......

ooops!!!!!
Sorry, but I'd be inclined to think it won't hold up as much weight as it should have. Put 350KG on it & see if it stays in place. I'd be worry as hell that it'll fall out at some point. & if the worst happened, woiuld your insurance cover you for a 'modified' towabar accident?

Not sure, I have the removable towbar & I think the locking mechanism is the same. Perhaps it woiuld come out if you remove the lock mech, but I'm afraid I really don't know. I know the lock can be replaced fairly easily, but the actual Pin....? Bodsys Brake Bible

You can get the pin out ..i have stripped mine down .
There is the lock , the splined shaft , a spring and the pin ( which has a very small spring in it aswell)
Dont know if you can just buy the pin though .. G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Hi All,
I guess that it has already been said (but more politely ) however, I can't believe that anyone would modify an engineering component (eg: a tow bar) without being aware of the consequences.
In short, if you can't SAFELY replace the modified component, throw the towbar assembly away and buy a new one.
Best Wishes,
Peter
