Oil
Which oil would anyone recommend? the manual just says 5W/30. Is it worth using something like magnatex if you only need a top up?

The Land Rover branded 5w 30 seems good value. It says its for the TDV6 on the label, and it costs £6 per litre.
Careful you don't overfill the engine, it does not take much oil to top up from the bottom of the dipstick.

It will use a bit of oil for the first few thousand miles. Then after the 1st service, it will use very little.

Up until 2004/05 Land Rover recommended Texaco oil for their vehicles, now it is Castrol.
If you are unable to get any of this just use a good quality oil from a recognised brand.
I suppose its who ever comes up with the best deal for Land Rover gets their box ticked for the supplier order.There's no I in team and no F in bonus

True enough lew. I see Mobil1 do a synthetic turbo diesel oil now 0/40, do you think there's any advantage in using an oil like this?
Synthetic oils are fantastic, but semi synthetics are very good too.
The use of these type of oils increases oil service intervals, but any claims for incresed mpg and engine smoothness in just hype.
Remember the advert of the two frying pans and the two types of oil, his missis must have loved washing up after his little demonstration.
The biggest problem with them is cost, most Land Rovers take a lot by car standards and some oil manufactures only supply in 1 or 4 litre bottles.
A quality semi will do the job admirably and save you a few bob.
