Advice for a soon to be owner

Hello Everyone,
The next couple of weeks can't go quick enough. I will be taking delivery of a new TDV6 SE and really looking forward to the experience.
I would appreciate some for feedback from members in the Brisbane area as to who they would recommend for the purchase and fitting of ARB products such as bull bar, winch and side steps etc.
I have been reading topics on this forum for some time and really appreciate the information available. It certainly assisted me in making my decision re the purchase of a Discovery.

Cheers,
bobk

bobk,
Before advising anyone regarding equipment, it would help to know what you want to achieve and what your plans are for the D3? Did you tick the rear e-diff?
City commute? Beach work? Bush? Towing? Desert?
Things to consider include
Front bar and do you really need the winch? A rear bar (protection) and also a wheel carrier, tyres, compressors, aux-battery, replacement tow bar, uhf, underbody protection, rock sliders (side steps are useless offroad and will be damaged).

Thanks DT. The vehicle will used for towing an off road caravan and associated off road work. I am considering bull bar with winch, snorkel, roof bars to carry our current kayaks. The side steps would make loading the kayaks much easier.
cheers,

Hi Bob,

First Congrats on your choice. I know i have loved every day with my Disco since getting it in December last year!

I have only had small things done to mine (after market roof rails etc) but found the folk at TJM Enoggora very helpful. They knew quite a lot about Disco specefic items and on a couple of occassions recommended products that they didn't sell so I always felt like they were interested in helping people - not just selling stuff!

Now that store has just converted to an ARB outlet so they have all of the goodies!

I haven't bought anything at the ARB at Nudgee (near the airport round-a-bout) but they have given good advice also so may be worth talking to.

Have fun!

If you are getting a winch, I would consider getting a dual battery set-up to power the winch and not drain your starting battery, also with a good dual battery set-up you will first recharge the starting batt then deliver power to your second car batt then send power to the caravan battery.

Have a look at Traxide for their set-up, I don’t have one yet but it’s on my list. The SC80-LR Plug-&-Play Kit + the D3 HCE Kit (high currant extension kit) is $340, it has everything you need and is designed for the Disco or RR Sport and caravan.

Which then brings up the question of what type of battery do you get? I think that I'll go for an AGM (Absorbable Glass Mat), probably an Optima "yellow top" if the budget will stretch. The AGM type has both high quick start and deep cycle properties, so I can use it as a starting batt in an emergency.

Also consider the Mitchell Bros tow bar as you have to disconnect the van to get at the spare tyre, not fun in high summer in a patch of galvanised burr.

Have Fun,

Ryall

My suggestions are pretty well in line with others.
My order of bang for buck (or most benefit) for offroading with a van.
Aux Battery, Yellow Top with Traxide controller (highly recommended)
Under bonnet compressor (ARB)
Mitchell Bros tow bar (LR is not useable offroad)
Decent tyres (AT2's)
UHF radio
Snokel (dust protection)
Steel bull bar (ARB or TJM)
Kaymar rear bar
Driving lights

Frigs, spare fuel etc can be carried in the van. There are "tyre mounted" steps to allow access to the roof carrier that may serve your purpose instead of the side steps.

To save disconnecting the van, if you don't have the Mitchell Bros hitch - and to save the effort of getting the spare from underneath, on hot/cold/muddy/wet/sandy day, try a rear wheel carrier on the standard rear bar from 4x4intelligence.com.au...

Definitely get the dual-battery setup from Traxide, AND a snorkel! Oh, and get some AT at least tyres with LT rating.

GME 3200 UHF - aerial mounted on wheel carrier Smile; LR roof rails/cross bars; Autosafe cargo barrier, Safari Snorkel; Traxide - aux battery; ARB bull bar with Tigerz11 winch; Lightforce 240 XGT driving lights (mitchell bros tow hitch to come)
