Broken Exhaust - Any Idea why this may have happened? |
|
Today, we went for a drive to take my kids to see some snow and I also wanted to do some off roading at the same time, so we went to Mount Pinnibar In NE Victoria. We drove 120kms on road and then hit a long and easy 4wd trail, which was all up hill, and eventually we reached some good snow, and then some thicker snow, I had my AT2 grabbers on and they performed really well in the snow.
We drove around in 1 foot snow for about 10kms ( I was in Off road Height) and then started to head back down the mountain. After we got to the bottom we went out for lunch at Corryong and then started driving home to Albury on bitumen on Cruise control and all of a sudden - BOOM, the exhaust snapped off right under the passeger seat (out of some kind of a muffler). I inspected it and there was no visible damage from foreign debris. It just snapped clenn off and sounded very very loud. It did have a protection plate bolted underneath it so I am baffled (pardon the pun) as to what caused it
Has anyone got any thoughts or heard of anything similar?

I'll have a look under mine tomorrow but I don't know where the joints are. Did it break at a joint or the pipe? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi Caver, It broke at a joint under the passenger seat. There is a black plate under it. Thanks, Nick

Sounds like a warranty claim to me. It's well forward and well protected. Most likely a faulty weld eventually snapped with the contraction and expansion hot cold of the snow. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks Caver, Thats what I think as well. I had a good look at it today and its a clean break right through.
I just hope I havent done any further damage to the engine or the turbo as I had to drive it 100kms after it broke to get home.

I see your location is on the border. Can I ask where/what your power upgrade is. Sounds very appealing!! <*(((<<

Hi Nick,
Any chance of posting a pic of the said joint in pipe work? I'd like to have a look to see if it is going to be a routine stress fracture caused by normal off road work?
Cheers What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

I was going over a hill on Cruise control at about 100kph. Then as i went over the crest and decended I heard a slightly louder noise coming from it as the cruise was not pushing it, and then when the crusie kicked back in as it started to flatten out, I hear it kind of pop and thats when it happened.
I dropped the Disco at the dealership today, one of the service guys thought its sounded pretty cool

Given what happened even if not a weld should be covered. Glad it's sorted though. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

No problem Nickski, perhaps a photo of the repaired joint next time you pop your head under the car? Again just to show fellow D3 owners where to look in case the fracture is systemic.

It is possible that the dealer took photos to document the damage for warranty purposes

Could it be some obscure accident caused by snow backing up under the vehicle, then suddenly falling down on a (now hot since running at 100km/hr exhaust)? I had an ice chunk fall out and break a drive shaft on a 1964 Land Cruiser in The States a few decades ago (at least that's what I told my old man to explain why a date turned into an overnighter ) Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.
