The manuals are confusing as well, the main hanfbook says no biodeisel but the warranty handbook says b5 is ok.
Main problems are particulate matter filtering rather than the lubricity. Fine particulates, smaller than the filter catches, (8-10 Micron) still cause problems with the injectors in common rail engines, Toyata are having the same rough idle issues with their injectors getting contaminated.

so, WTF does it mean if Julian's insurer are paying over big bucks??? knowing insurance companies, they would not pay a red cent if they could get out of it...Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

I guess the insurance is paying because Land Rover says 5% biodiesel maximum is okay but more will ruin the engine.
Hi Guys,
Just back from trip up to Airlie Beach which I ended up doing in the RRS TDV8 because of the biodiesel problem with the Disco. Disco now back home after ULR drained tank and fuel lines and found no other problems. Thankfully running fine now. All covered by insurance apart from $500 excess.
Happen to speak to mate in Dubbo who runs garage and he said he has had about a dozen Hiluxes and Landcruisers in with rough idle etc due entirely to using diesel blended with a % of biodiesel. So a very common problem.
By the way RRS was a fantastic car to do the big trip in, no problem overtaking and remarkable 8 to 9 litr/100k ( bout 30 to 35 mpg!). Main issue was lack of luggage space. Missed going onto Fraser but drove down Rainbow Beach with tyres (19s) at bout 22psi and no probs.
Had car serviced at Bruce Lyntons Southport who seemed pretty good only complaint was when I checked tyre pressures and found they had 47psi in the front and 43 in the back! Thought the ride was a bit harsh when I picked it up from them. Also $171 for engine oil was a bit steep I thought.
Anyway Disco probably better fro a big trip mainly cause of more space.

I hope you enjoyed the drive down the beach at Rainbow, because from 2009 it will cost you $37.10 for a month pass.

I see from July 1 next year Caltex / Woolworths will not be selling straight diesel.
My company fuel card is with them.
Ranges from 2% to 20% Bio blend.

As there is a big trend to bio diesel I do not understand car manufactures makeing engines that can not use it or begrudgingly can use a small blend.
They must have their heads firmly in the sand
Is there a valid reason for this
Cheers

Rob, I think it has something to do with the fact that almost anyone can make their own biodiesel (the internet has lots of methods using a variety of materials). Therefore the quality standards that mainstream producers (BP, Shell, et al) won't be met or cannot be met consistently. Today's diesels are very hi-tech compared with say, ten years ago, when filtered chip oil could be used to run the family diesel-engined Mercedes (and there exists plenty of anecdotal evidence that that was the case).
So to protect their investments (and not run the risk of having the pants sued off them) manufacturers of all modern diesels stipulate the quality of the diesel as being akin to diesel dragged out of the ground rather than grown in a crop. The fact that they seem to begrudgingly accept 5% would indicate that at least that percentage will do very little or no harm to the hi-tech diesel engine.
They are very refined engines so until BP, Shell and all the others actively produce, market and distribute a biodiesel we will have to wait or risk our engines testing a biodiesel we trust. When the user manuals are updated and specify more than 5% is anybody's guess but I think it is tied to the major multinational oil producers and their ventures into biodiesel production.LeighW
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

I've been running mine on Biodiesel without knowing it - probably for the 2.5 years I've had my D3. The servo nearest me is a Liberty and i fill up there all of the time. Only noticed the other day that it was Biodiesel. I didn't think anything of it until I just stumbled across this thread 5 minutes ago
I should also add I've only just ticked over 37,000 km and a good 7000km of that has been touring a long way away from my local servo.2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather
