| DSC activates with different tyres fitted |

Hi
I now had it confirmed from Landrover, that the DSC can be activated by simply fitting different tyres between front and back. I have Goodyear Wranger at the front and Cooper ATR at the back. The Goodyear Wranger were still ok and the rear ones worn, so I replace the rear ones with Cooper ATR. The Goodyear Wranger are hopeless in terms of tyre wear. I only got around 20K out of them. Interesting that on some right hand bends the DSC would activate.
I thought I let everyone know.
I am now contemplating swapping the front ones to Cooper ATR also. Anyone had any DSC experience with Cooper ATR fitted?

I think it's generally recognised that mixing type of tyres is not advisable in most driving scenarios on any vehicle. Is there any reason why you have the current mix? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

So do LR advise against mixing front to back? I never realised that it was a problem provided you didn't mix radials and crossply.
If it is a known problem why the hell did Stratstones Doncaster fit new Wranglers on the back and Toyo on the front prior to delivery of my D3??

Are we talking about DSC reacting to differences of grip ....... which would be with a differentially worn
set of the same tyres also ...... wouldn't it ?

I actually checked with Landrover & the dealer and they said it would be ok as long as the size is the same. The main reason I did this was because the front ones were relatively new (one new + one new spare). I didn't feel like throwing out a perfectly fine pair of new Wranglers, that's why I only replaced the rear ones. ----------------

Last year I put 19" AT's on the front and newly-purchased MRT's on the back. On very smooth bitumen or rough roads it drove okay, but on the normal ragged and worn bitumen - WOAAHH. It drove like a 1965 Landcruiser SWB and the DSC light kept flashing whenever going around a corner. I subsequently did a few controlled experiments (eg, left side only MTR's, front only MRT's) and it still went all squirrelly. I've no idea if a difference in sidewall stiffness or what causes it. The tyre diameters are very close. It did it a bit with one MRT on and 3 AT's, but not near as bad. Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

Since fitting the Cooper ATRs I have noticed no change in DSC usage, only if I take it a bit too fast on a roundabout, it will kick in slowing the vehicle, but I soon learnt to moderate the speed BEFORE the roundabout. Happened with the GoodYears also.
With the Coopers on it has once activated when towing a 2.5 t van going up a hill and the corner was poorly designed (it actually decreased radius half way through; good road design shouldn't have that feature!). ABS kicking in was most prominent that time, rather than loss of power.
BTW, I suspect most manufacturers design and thoroughly test their new vehicles with ONE type of tyre fitted front and rear. It is not common practice for owners to buy tyres in other than full sets (unless they are replacing a single tyre or single axle set and then they usually match the other tyres on the vehicle.
Of interest to some members might be the fact that different tyre manufacturers might have a tyre that has the same size markings to another manufacturers but the tyres could have different wear characteristics and slightly different actual sizes. The last factor can probably be put down to manufacturer's tolerances.
Either way, it is a safe practice to put on tyres of the same make, size and age (tyres deteriorate usually becoming harder as the plasticiser evacuates from the tyre over time.
