carrying long things on a roof rack |
|
I am going to buy a portabote, a 12 ft long foldable boat which has a size when folded of 4 inches thick, 2 feet wide and 12 feet long. (long surfboard).
I want to mount it on my D3 with the 2 roof rails...it will stick out from the front of the ceiling about 2 feet, anybody any experience with carrying long boards like this on a D3?
(I dont want to buy the expedition rack, since then I can't park in any garage anymore).
Thanks and best wishes for you all,
Dirk

Jako,
Not sure if it's much help but I used to carry a 22 foot Canadian canoe on the top of my short wheelbase shogun with no problems. I used Thule roof bars with the canoe carrier which basically are L shaped blocks that stop the canoe from sliding left and right on the bars. I am yet to try the same on the D3 but will in the summer.

I have the same experience as cecil: I carry white water kajaks. My longest one is 2,5meter. No problem whatsoever as long as you fix them properly and as long as the load itself won't break due to the force of the air pushing under the parts sticking out (I guess cardboard wouldn't survive for example).
I have some pics in my gallery.
Somtimes we even fit inflated rafts (up to 5m of lenght) on the roof. Instead of deflating, folding them and inflating them again the next morning, we put them on the roof and bring them back to the camp site.
If you carry very long boats, without special supports like those of thule, I would advise to strap both ends of the boat: back end to the towing ring o the car - front end of the boat somewhere to the bumper or the front towing ring.
VEEL PLEZIER MET JE BOOT, SJAKO!

Thanks for the info!
Do you guys have the roofrails from LR, because I heard that Thule does not support the D3 yet?
Driving on the highway with this long surfboard at 120 km/hr is possible without the change of docking the D3 to the International Space Station?

LR "crossbars" + Thule kajak holders (not even needed for kanoes or your boat I guess)
It takes more speed than 120km/h or a bigger wing to lift your 3tuns! I drove to France with two kajaks at +/-150km/h with strong face wind and did not see any stars, only clouds (when looking up)
Most important is good strapping with regular checks. At high speed, the things start to "wapperen".
