| Headlights - instant death. |

Left for work early this morning, and approx 1/2 a second after switching headlights on I was plunged into darkness, no headlights at all,Click,Click click, Damn! As I was running late, I put the front fogs on and carried on. This pm I decided to put myself through a considerable amount of pain and have a swap about with associated fwd of glovebox fuses  and relays in eng bay, as I thought it unlikely both (halogen) filaments would blow at exactly the same moment. WRONG !.......Turned out to be the Philips Xtreme bulbs I fitted about 10 months ago. Ok, I can take the hurt of bulbs blowing now and again, and have put the original 1 candlepower ones back in for now,but question is......is my D3 ailing? is the alternator giving out some undesireable power surge or something to cause this? Anyone else had this? Grateful for any help on this guys n gals

hope it's not the bulbs as I've got the extremes in both dip and main beam, they are 12 months old. It sounds pretty unusual for both bulbs to go at exactly the same time, what did they look like when you took em' out? Have the oem bulbs been ok? Club Exped trailer

This is the first problem I have encountered with the lights Ent, (except brake lights). I still have the Xtreme ones in the main beam, but these don't get used as much, so hopefully will last longer. Original (dim by comparison) bulbs have not blown on me in the 2 yrs or so they were in for. Blown bulbs didn't look odd or discoloured as far as I can tell.

Mine eats bulbs had the volts checked out all is well just keep a good supply

Both my dipped beam bulbs went within 12 hours of each other on Betty - probably more like an hour of each other if you include the time the lights were on. Only happened the once though. Disco 5 HSE Lux

I had the same problem when I fitted Osram Nightbreakers about a yeat ago, 2 sets (4 bulbs)blew within a week, both were replaced foc. The last time the guy at the motor factors said they had a lot of problems with some newer cars including the D3 due to their higher voltage. I don't know if this is true or not.
They suggested the Phillips Extreme as being more tolerant to the higher voltage and touch wood I've been happy with them. Chipped, K&N, tow pack, AT2's, Mantec, fridge in boot, invertor, Garmin, laptop/Memory Map, Optima yellow top, Traxide Kit, Phillips Extreme bulbs

Brighter bulbs use higher temperatures. The quartz will be subject to more built up stresses due to higher temp and can also be sensitive to water vapour/dirt. Always fit the bulbs wearing gloves to prevent dirt/grease getting onto the quartz. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Thanks for the input lads. The bulbs weren't pawed when I fitted them, or I suspect they would have only lasted 10 minutes rather than 10months. I guess the filaments just reached their tolerance level, coupled with the fact that around 15v is showing on a voltmeter across the battery (eng running) every time I have checked it. Both going pop together though does surprise me, and I hope it's not going to be a regular occurrence like the brake light filaments.
