Extension Speaker buzz from mobile phone |
|
I installed a CB (Thanks Ken ) & put a small cheap Maplins extension speaker inside the centre H cover. When it has signal going to it from the CB and the iPhone has network signal traffic, I get the annoying 'mobile signal' noise over the extension speaker.
What causes this & hwo can I avoid it (without having to re-locate the phone or the speaker) Is there a particular type of speaker that shoudl be used or is there a way for screening the speaker cable so it doesn't do this?
All advice gratfully received. Bodsys Brake Bible

It's a tough one to solve without moving things further apart. A non-linear element is picking up the RF pulsing signal from your phone and converting it to an audible audio signal. So yes, properly shielded speaker cable may help, and check all the connections to ground. Failing that a lead box for the phone will work (but you won't receive any calls) and I'm told tin hats made out of aluminium foil can stop the voices!
Seriously, it probably sounds worse when your phone is connected to an normal or EDGE signal than 3G? 2005 D3 HSE

Haven't looked to see if it's worse with edge or 3g, but will do tonight.
Are there different types of speaker that may affect this more than others? Does anyone have an old car phone speaker they don't want that may make a difference? Bodsys Brake Bible

The noise is probably less to do with the speaker and more to do with the amplifier driving it receiving the interference somehow. It's possible though that if the speaker coil is acting as the ariel in this case, then if you could get a shielded speaker it might be better.
If you have some PC speakers (which are shielded to prevent them picking up noise from the CRT they're sat on) you could try those to see if the shielding makes the difference before buying? Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Good point, I'll give that a go first.
Speaker is direct from the CB, so not sure if it's the CB that's picking up the interference or the extension speaker Bodsys Brake Bible
