Faulty Steering Angle sensor

Hello,

A few weeks ago, whilst beach driving and in extended mode, the suspension warning light and HDC warning came on, the suspension dropped to Normal height and the Terrain Responsed switched off. TR and height adjustment were both locked out.

After about an hour, I got height adjustment back, but the TR stayed off for abour three hours.

The Dealer told me I had a faulty Steering Angle Sensor (a replacement is now on order).

Does anyone know:
1.What is a Steering Angle Sensor?
2. What does it do?
3. Can I bypass it if necessary?
4. Why did it's failure lock out height adjustment and TR???

Well, the name says everything... It is a sensor which relays informantion of the steering angle ie. position of the front wheels to the brain of the car. This information is essential to DSC, HDC and different TR programs. This is because the steering angle is a very important factor when the above mentioned systems need to decide what actions to take: brake one wheel etc.

I don't really see a reason for ever wanting to bypass it. The height adjustment lock out is a bit mysterious. But then again, all the systems mentioned are somehow connected to each other. So when one part fails, it affects the other systems too.

As you've probably worked out it's the extra 35mm. When the belly is on the ground for a bit, she flashes 'Entering Extended Mode' on the message centre and starts lifting.

I did notice though, that she will stay in Extended Mode unless you either manually drop the suspension or you go over the 40kph limit for Offroad Height (or you break the Steering Angle Sensor!) Smile

hi 10fc, thks yrs, offroading in greece is ''almost paradise''
there are no restrictions here..meaning tht u can put the map down
and GPS along, and u can go anywhere.. frm rivers upto the top of the mountains, and frm the forest down to the beaces..either on country roads
or through unenexplored paths. if u plan a trip can pls contact foll
site (www.offroads.gr). i used to go with them and are very good.

jamo... obiusly u didn't test to get the extra 35mm manualy after the extented mode ?? (it could be nice to know tht works)

Jamo,

just wondering can you induce the fault by moving your steering column in/out? you may want to advise your dealer that where the wires from the steering angle sensor go into the main harness there are some splice joints which can become loose and flag a fault with the steering angle ecu.Two of thes are 'can bus'wires which is the communication bus between certian ecu's hence the reason when these fault other circuits will also.


It is highly unlikely that the steering angle ecu has failed

Not sure quite what ypu mean, but if your saying did I try to re-enter extended mode manually afetr the car had returned to normal height, then yes I have tried before, but the system will not allow it!

My dealer is 700km away so I only go there occasionally. Can you tell me where this part of the harness is, or if I bought some of the technical notes, would they show me??. Question Question Very Happy Very Happy

I'd like to be able to rectify loose wiring myself.
