Left front wheel arch sensor |
|
Apologies because I know this issue has been randomly addressed in various other posts and sections here but a quick question. When I got my car, I immediately covered the visible connectors at the rear underside with Waxoyl and I have never had a water ingress problem yet despite being through some very deep water. However, I note that there are exposed connectors under the LFWA. Has anyone got to them without dealer help as I would like to seal this, myself, as well. Is it simply a case of unscrewing the arch covers underneath? Thanks

basically yes it is, although there is a deeper issue with corrosion of the connectors and ensuring that you don't trap any existing moisture in there.
regarding the rear underside of the vehicle, the 'exposed' wiring outside of the connectors is not an issue, this is simply the wiring leaving it's protective conduit and entering the connector, which themselves are sealed. Many Disco3's have been wading to my personal knowledge, none of which have had problems with water ingress to electrical connections, with the exception of the one you mention above, although vehicles that have not been used for anything other than road use have had this problem, so it does not specifically occur after wading

Thanks 10forcash. At the risk of asking stupid questions, if the connectors are themselves supposed to be sealed why the corrosion and why the risk of trapping any moisture?

in relation to the specific connector behind the N/S/F wheelarch liner, although yours may not be affected, or may be one with the potential for the fault but not yet mainfested itself, sealing outside the connector would also seal in any moisture already present where leaving it alone would allow it to 'breathe' by virtue of the lack of sealing under air pressure and depression.
It gets a bit complicated to explain but basically the airflow around a connector can bypass the seal once it reaches a certain flow rate. This effect was first noticed on the crank sensor connector on the 1.6 CVH engines fitted to mkIII Escorts coupled with heat soak, they very efficiently drew moisture onto the contact surfaces, Ford produced an (unsuccesful) fix by replacing the tin plated connectors with gold plated ones - due to the low currents involved, gold plated connectors offered less contact resistance. Eventually they realised that it was airflow at relatively high speeds (63mph IIRC) that was causing moisture to be forced past the seal, mainly due to the depression created behind the connector rather than the air pressure on the head of it.
