Once you put the chains on, tyre choice is immaterial as the chains do all the work
STT's or MT/R's will only delay the point at which you put the chains on, standard tyres are fine on fresh snow but how likely is that on French roads? the reason for chains is packed snow or ice, not 300mm of loose fresh snow
So what are you saying Iain, do as Bodsy suggested and leave the MTR's on, I was only going to change them as it has been hinted that more MPG is to be gained using standard tyres, and doing over 2000 miles I thought it may be worth it I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.
