Oct 2007 D3 TDV6 SE: At 20 000 km the rythmic (wa-wa), what I assume to be tyre noise, is just about unbearable. Standard factory Goodyear tyres. Definite uneven wear. Correct pressures. Frequent tyre swop, balancing, alignment checks no improvement.
See on US forums lot of issues with these tyres and even class action law suite against LR.
Has anyone had similar problems? So far agent has been unable to diagnose and fix anything on my vehicle first time. It's the usual "we don't hear what you hear, sir" BS!
Received email from agent today:
"Herewith report on following:
Noise while driving – We have put 4x new wheels from a brand new
Discovery on your vehicle, test drove and found noise was gone.
Refit your own wheels and noise was back.
Our findings: Tyre noise
Remedy: Needs to rotate tyres from left to right with every service
We can also send the vehicle for wheel alignment to ensure that your
vehicle's wheel toe is in spec BUT the vehicle must have a full tank
of fuel and Land Rover does not pay for wheel alignment and it will
be for your account.
We need your authorization to do the above."
Now, this has definitely not diagnosed the problem! Is it a vehicle problem or an inherent problem with the tyres, as the vehicle has had tyre swop, 2x wheel alignments + 3 balances over the last 6 months that didn't cure the problem.
Has anyone else had similar tyre wear problems?

Wranglers are known for this type of wear. Happened on my Freelander and D3's.
Its been discussed here many times in the past.

I have the same problem.... Alignment is perfect, the tyres were rotated/Balanced on the service but the noise is still there.
I have resorted to putting the music louder. Disco 2 V8

Tyre wear / previous posts |
|
Thank you for your responses Rev and Simon
So what's the final outcome of all these forum discussions? A Vehicle problem or a tyre problem? Why do Wranglers wear this way? Look, I'm looking for a permanent non-recurring cure or we will change brands for sure. This is just unacceptable.

Thats the noise mine make but its not that annoying and i have no unusual wear in 25k miles. Lots of life yet and they will be changed well before they are illegal for the same. I find it is often hard to be subjective to noise when we all have different levels of whats ok. You should here my Simex ET's on the road.

Hi there just to sort out my understanding...
The Goodyear wranglers you are takling about are NOT the MT (Mud Terrian) ones fitted for G4 - though they have their own noise and problems for normal use. YES ?
The MT's on mine does not have serious road noise - but then I am coming from a Disco 1 ex-CT also with roofrack and on the D3 the windnoise from the rack I am sure cancel all tyre noise ...
Just the uneven wear that worries me as my MT's in front are also worn but I bought like that and will fit new MT's and do wheels and then repost after few thousand km... Nico

Nico,
It's the standard Wranglers, not the MTR's, that are Cr p. However it mat be a good idea to get your alignment done / checked.
WWWorker,
Glad to see you found us on this site - I replied to you on the Community site. So the stealers have confirmed it's the Wranglers. The solution is easy - change tyre brands with the proviso that you get a written letter from the Dealer Principal stating that should the Wranglers not be the source of the problem then his stealership will not only find and fix the real problem, but pay for half the value of your new tyres, as the Wranglers have a life expectancy of around 40k.
I fail to see why the tyres should be rotated left to right - surely front to back (but I stand to be corrected on this). As a matter of course I have my alignment done every second service, which for the MY06 is 24k, as a precautionary measure. Cost is about R400. Never had to have a full tank of diesel in the car though. I would also phone LR Customer Services and ask to speak to one of their technical guys. They're normally pretty good and if need be give the stealers a good on.
Good luck

If this is an inherent Wrangler problem, then why should the customer pay for replacement tyres. I got a new set of tyres (of my choice) out of GY before; 2 of 4 new tyres oval!
I have also seen on one of the forums comment LR suspension "eats tyres".
Coarse tar road surface obviously does wonders for the noise, but unacceptable on smooth surfaces; something I'd expect on a Tata
New to this great forum, would like to search for similar threads but no search facility?

With my previous 'out of round' experience, we were unable to balance the tyres from new; on the LR the tyre noise occured from 6000km. I assume the LR approved tyre fitment centre in George would be able to check for this, correct?
It is just amazing, that while this is a well known phenomenon with the LR3, the agents will try to BS there way through this, again, like with so many other service agents, think that all vehicle owners are technical retards!

Recommendation for replacement tyres |
|
Best describes what I'm subjected to!
"I took my Wranglers up to 40K and they sounded like a Chinook was permanently following me
Changed to Synchrones couple of weeks ago, difference is amazing"
OK, what are your recommendations for replacement tyres? Road biased please. Low noise.
