Oil warming heater

Just wondering Idea
It is claimed that most wear & tear to the engine is caused by cold start ups because the oil doesn't function at it's optimum until at a set temperature.
I know that in F1 cars they preheat the oil before firing up the engine.
So just wondering if such a thing as a pre timed oil heater could be bought/fabricated for the D3?
Over to the Techies.......

Thumbs Up

Oil heater

I believe that in places like Canada they have oil pre heaters which take the place of the dipstick. Pull out the dipstick and pop in the heater, it then plugs into an electrical supply, not sure if this is 240 or a transfomred down supply. I would think similar things are available in America as well, perhaps one of our friends over the pond may know more and can supply info.

Seriously, my late grandfather used to put a greenhouse heater under his Humber Sceptre at night. That was back in the days of real winters, and 20w 50 oil.

Yep, that just reminded me that my dad used to do this with his Standard Vanguard.
damn, that's just made me feel very very old! Sad

But surely one would have thought things should have been picked up and moved on since then.

Yep, the oil has. Modern cold 5w 30 is as thin as hot 20w 50, and stays almost contant viscosity at a much wider temperature range. Thats why we dont need to heat the oil anymore Thumbs Up
