Rear Diff fails at 19,000 miles.
Hi all,
My 55 Discovery 3 HSE broke down at the weekend - initially appeared to be NS rear brake pad locked on causing obvious heat to disk and vibration.
We were recovered back home, some 100 miles on a recovery lorry, and then the vehicle was picked up and taken back to the dealer.
Initial problem was NS rear pad sorted, only to be informed that the rear diff had failed - which had caused the vibration.
A LR engineer had to assess the problem before the work could be passed as OK to be done under the warrenty. I have now been informed that the work is in hand and the parts will be ordered - but not to hold my breath as it might "a while" as the part might need to go onto back order!
I'm pretty gutted that the diff has gone at under 20k and more gutted that I might be without the car for "a while".
Do any of you guys have any other info on diff failure at low milage?
Or any clues as to the time it might take to source the parts?
Mine went at less than 2 months old whilst in Europe and a very nice stealer in Paris did mine in less than 2 days including sourcing and having it couriered to them.Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

See if you can pay extra to get a locking one in. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Stiil no news
The diff is was on "back order" and has now been marked as "critical" - but there is no indication as to when it will be available. Although they are trying to source one from the production line............

Sorry to hear that. What car have left you with?
Initially I had a Passat from Avis - then the dealer has loaned me a Freelander.
I still have a V6 Shogun, a Corvette Roadster and van though

Collected my Discovery on Thursday and all is well.
The service from Barretts of Ashford (Kent) was excellent and very thorough at all times. Shame it took so long to source the replacement diff but they did go out of their way to get me in a 4x4 during htis period.
So I'm now looking forward to so trouble free motoring.......................... well I won't speak too soon
Cheers,
Phil.

My front diff went at well under 20,000 miles too. Fixed no quibbles under warranty. If you never try, you'll never know...
First one failed at 24K, the replacement failed after about 10 miles.........both were on back order and took ages to source and replace.D3 05 SE (old one)

The tech I spoke with implied that there may have been a batch problem where the inside of the diff was painted/had paint inside. The paint that detached and became a kind of grinding paste in the oil!!!!
So sorry to hear from you other guys with diff problems and I hope you get back on the road asap
