Tricle Charger for when Disco not used for a few days |
|
Has anyone got any experience of one of these units, CTEC XS800 Charger?
http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/Store/P...ductId=105
I have had a couple of messages flash up when the Disco has been standing for a few days. I think it's related to low volts as once started everything is fine (battery is also fine). But was thinking of connecting up one of these if I know I will not be using the Disco for a few days.
I also have a couple of cars stored in the garage and no matter what I do over the last 20 years I have battery problems through infrequent use.
Any advice will be helpful.

Yes, very good. I have the next model up though, the 3600. it recovered a Yellow Top from 4volts and a 120ah leisure battery from dead.
if you have a costco close by they often have them for around £20 Duncan

It says it only charges up to 32Ah. Disco is about 70ish iirc. Will only condition your fully charged battery at the higher Ah rating..... Bodsys Brake Bible

works fine though. Ive recharged the main battery a few times when the battery hasnt had enough charge to start the car. I dont know much (well nothing) about how it works, but it just does Duncan

yeah, sorry posts are out of order. The original link shows the smaller charger which IMHO would be unsuitable. 3600 should be fine as you say dunc Bodsys Brake Bible

I got a similar one in Lidl which does the 'stored' cars well over the winter - charge for a few days then let it discharge for a couple of weeks and repeat the cycle. I use it on the disco too - plug it into the white towing electrics socket when in the drive and let it trickle over a few days if it is not used. I don't know if it charges it properly, but it switches from charge to trickle after a while. Charges at 13.9V then drops to 13V for trickle. As long as it stops the battery discharging that is fine with me - I don't expect it to restore a dead battery - just prevent it happening. I think it was less than £20 - but like all things at Lidl, they appear unexpectedly!

Going on the threads here and a few other places, are you lot over there having a particularly cold winter.
Seems to be a lot of battery problems and not just in LRs.

When I get on of these chargers I am interested in the White Aux towing socket connection.
Instead of connecting to the battery and having some connector hanging behind the grill.
Can anyone tell me how the white socket works and what pins I need to connect to?
I've had a look and Lidl had a charger for sale on Nov 6th, for £12.99, going to Costco and Lidl again today.

Lidl are a bit unpredictable stock wise unfortunately. Usually the store staff can tell you when they next run of car accessories will be in - there seems to be a rota! White electric socket has a live pin - can't remember which it is but a quick google gives the standard pin outs. Test with a multimeter. I've built binding posts into a small box on a lead that terminates in the white plug and I connect the charger to the box. That way the charger stays in the garage and not out in the wet! Plan to plug the solar cells into it in the summer. It is a pain doing the under the bonnet disconnection bit al the time - although it did stop SWMBO from using the car as she didn't want to touch the electrics!
