Iphone and home activation |
|
The iphone is available for online purchase and home activation. What happens if one were to buy an iphone and then forget to activate it? Would it be usable with say another contract SIM that happened to be lying around . I remember somebody on here did this with an iphone 1.
Cheers, BCP

you still need to activate it wither with itunes or with the various unlock software that's around. Do a search for yellowsnow (really!!), Simon posted about some beta software and Wiggs is trying it. Another member has it working on that as well, is unlocked & can also still be used with itunes Bodsys Brake Bible

You can jail break iPhone 3G, have been able to for a while now - it was the software unlocking that was until recently impossible. Some SIM card unlockers did work, until the latest Apple firmware. My son had one with the turboSIM solution, but that stopped working after be forgot NOT to update the phones firmware
yellowsn0w has had almost daily updates and seems to be pretty reliable at unlocking now with little fuss.
Jailbreak the phone, install Cydia and then download and install yellowsn0w.
ONLY works with the latest Apple firmware too.
If it doesn't work, you can just restore from iTunes and everything will be back to normal - the dev teams software is very unobtrusive from what they say.

Would I need to activate the O2 contract or just buy the phone and unlock?

You still need to activate the phone in iTunes as far as I know.
Not sure if that process requires you to sign up for a contract though before you get to take your phone home though - you probably do have too. PAYG would be a better option. These are available now or very soon I believe.
But double check with Wiggs as he has done this I believe.

Not sure about the 3 g one ...my old 2 g one i jailbroke and unlocked ...so it diddn't have to be activated with itunes.
The yellowsnow unlocking software is a bit unstable at the moment , but when working correct i suspect that it will work with itunes in the same way as the 2 g phone .
I purchased a sim unlocked 3g iphone so dont have all the hassle of updates / having to redo the jailbrake etc etc G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

It's the buy online that interests me. I've got a good T-mobile contract that I don't want to change. O2 are selling contract phones by post. I remember Dr Lex did this with an iphone 1 and never triggered the contract. I think Simoniz has a sideline in unlocking so I'll wait until he comes along.
