Over the last few weeks I have noticed a metallic rubbing noise metal on metal.
It only happen when moving, so it not engine related,
The noise appears to be coming from the center or rear of the vehicle
Above 40mph you can't hear it,
It sound like a brake pad which is down to the metal running against the disc, except it's not at braking has no effect on the noise and the pads are only half worn.
I have looked underneath ad I cannot see any pipes rubbing against the drive shafts, or the back of the prop (the front hidden behind the shield.)
It's too 'light' a noise to be a bearing, but I am not sure what a doggy diff sounds like.
Any thoughts ?

Shiny,
Before assuming it's the driveline, have you considered it might be the EGR parking brake shoes rattling/rubbing/out of adjustment?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?
Could be - I have been lucky so far with those, It's about my turn I suppose.
Jack it up and spin the wheel may be worth a try ?

Hopefully, yes, that should be enough to prove it. Not tried this, but with full time 4 wheel drive, I assume it'll have to be either in neutral or both rear wheels off the ground for the wheel to turn easily?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

sounds similar to the noise I had at 8500 miles LRassist said it was a propshaft, which was replaced under warranty within a couple of days.

I have exactly the same noise on mine. Started a month or so ago and have had the EPB checked as well as the running gear.
Its pretty constant and does not change in pitch at all.
Is noticeable as you say up to around 30-40 depending on the road noise as this drowns it out.
Stops at around 5MPH just before you come to a halt.
Sometimes its not there too which is strange.
Dealer has been out and has heard it (which is why the checked for EPB rubbing 1st time round) but cannot track it down.
BTW - thread title says nose not noise - nearly missed it

I have a similar noise on my D1 which started a few months ago. Mine seems to be coming from the driver's side front or possibly centre and it is exactly as Simon describes. I can only hear it when the window's open and then normally only if I'm in a tunnel or in the outside lane with railings in the central reservation. I don't think the noise is ever there until I've done at least 5 miles or so. The noise seems to be constant - it doesn't seem to significantly increase with speed.
I'm totally mystified so very interested to see how this thread develops albeit that my problem isn't with my D3. I've recently tightened up and correctly torqued the driver side front wheel bearing (new 5k miles ago) but it didn't cure the problem. I can't find anything loose nor rubbing.

I've had a simular noise which turned out to be a small stone stuck between the brake rotor and the protective plate. although I assumed while it may mark the rotor the stone the metal is stronger; within a few days it disapeared as the stone broke up.Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!
thought about the stone, but to tinny for that - now booked into Shukers for a look.

check the heatshield that passes over/ under the drive shaft and protects the fuel tank on the passenger side.I once had a hexhead screw that retained it come loose and the shaft was rubbing slightly against it as it rotated.Noise was only evident at +5 mph.
Well if you are going to tidy the thread over 40 MPG
