Pre Heater

I know, I know, this subject has been thrashed to death elsewhere.

Picked up my HSE this morning and asked about the pre-heater. Told there was none on it.

I will read the book this weekend, but the weather makes me want the pre-heater working now.

Can someone tell me:

A) Do I have one?

B) How do I turn it on / set the timer?

Cheers

A) Assuming you've got a TDV6 yes you should have. Open the bonnet, it's on the nearside behind the coolant chamber, washer filler etc. and in front of the battery box. Metal and plastic thing with wires and pipes attached, should say Webasto on it somewhere

B) Assuming your D3 is 06MY you can't.

The dealer probably won't acknowlege that you have a pre heater fitted only that you have a fuel burning heater Rolling Eyes

On 2006 models it is a "supplementary fuel burning heater" as it can only comes on when the engine is on.

No, but the present trial D3 it was placed on broke down. Mine broke down before that and NeilH's before broke down before mine. Webasto only need to get a car to last long enough to trial it.

I'm new to the forum and a new owner. So could someone give me a brief history of the pre-heater issue? My TDV6 has one, but I don't know anything about it, and don't remember anything in the manual about it.
What's the story?

webasto heater

I have just completed my LR level 1 course at Skipton. The instuctors told me that the pre heater works automatically when the outside temperature is below a certain level. I think he said 4 degrees. It operates on its own when the engine is started. I have noticed on very cold mornings two plumes of smoke from the rear exhaust pipes and a small plume of smoke from under the front nearside bumper. I am told it heats the water in the engine and this enables the heaters to warm up faster and the engine to get to working temp faster and so saving fuel I guess.
Hope this helps. Thumbs Up

That's exactly how it works on the D3 - it's a supplementary fuel-burning water heater.

The issue with some of the '05 model year D3s is that there is/was an option in the Settings menu for a "Pre-Heater" timer - i.e. to program the heater to run without the engine and warm the engine. However the timer doesn't work when set unless a cunning trick is used to keep the car alive ("Radio Trick") in which case it will start but doesn't always stop gracefully.

Land Rover have denied the Pre Heater functionality exists, and have threatened to remove the menu setting.

Thanks for that. Having an S I don't think I have that settings option, but could you describe the radio trick anyway?

Thanks.

Andy.

Radio trick is just that really - leaving the radio switched on keeps the car's clock and timer awake and allows the pre-heater software to kick in.

so you could set a time for the heater to come on in the morning then?

Am I right in saying the S doesn't have that option?

So the pre-heater now just starts with the engine when its cold, to warm it up quicker?

Yes, except that the radio turns itself off after ~45 minutes even if switched back on, so you'd have to go out in the morning anyway to set the timer, then go and clean your teeth Wink

If you want more info try an 'all terms' search for "pre heater radio trick" Wink
