INDEPENDENT SERVICING AND TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGE THOUGHTS
First year out of warranty so will be going to an inde have been quoted £150 for 4th year 60k B service ( car has done 37k ) with local landy specialist who worked on Disco3 development and has a pre production Disco3 so it should be in safe hands. Local Knutsford dealer though very good wanted £450( less £75 discount for jan service) but its a no brainer really for a 4 year old car.
When talking with inde interestingly he gave me the option of a £235 service with a transmission oil change ( gearbox oil is £14 a litre ) as he advised that the oil should no way be left for LR recommended 10 years. He has been seeing FFRR's and RRS's with gearbox woes at 40k which he has put down to in no small part to the condition of the oil which he has extracted .
Was wondering what peoples thoughts where on this and independant servicing once warranty has expired.TONGA GREEN TDV6 S MANUAL

alot has to do with the residual values when you come to sell... my advise if you can find a man well qualified like that, then great, but so long as he got the kit to do all the software bits and bobs
Forgot to say he has all the kit made a point of telling me thatTONGA GREEN TDV6 S MANUAL

For that price and for ease of mind on the auto box, provided your happy and confident in your indi's tools and knowledge, then I'd probably say yes. Had a vaux cavalier auto many years ago, scheduled box service was about 60k anyway. Made a huge difference to the smoohness of the box.Bodsys Brake Bible

The auto box oil thing is an interesting one.
FFRR do seem to have some vehicles where the box doesn't last, but there are others that do mega miles that are perfectly OK. It doesn't seem to fit that those that have had their oil changed are the one's that last.
Saying that obviously changing the oil is bound to help, & changing it regularly you help the fact that you only get half of it out anyway, due to the rest being in the torque converter etc.
As for independent servicing, I have a vested interest, so best keep quiet, although I haven't heard of anyone having a lower residual due to non dealer servicing.
The vehicle can be serviced outside of the dealer network from day one, without affecting the warranty, assuming the normal service guidelines are adhered to. The only slight pitfall is if you are after a 'goodwill' repair after the 3 years are up, then you are out of luck unless a full dealer history is shown, but as Landrover only usually pay a percentage of the repair, it is often cheaper elsewhere anyway. I would recommend using genuine parts within warranty, although legally the parts don't have to be, as long as they are 'matching quality', but it may be just the excuse needed to throw the claim out.
As there are very few specialists out there, the problem is finding them that have the equipment & knowledge.

I had difficulty locating an independant that was able and had experience of changing cambelts. Not an issue of course until you get to 105K miles!
However, after my recent experience with my local dealer it has reminded me how much I hate not talking to the person/techy who actually does the work.

Cayman6.
That seems a good deal and good advice for the money.
Who is the local specialist as I live in the Northwich area and have service due next month.

If you're going to change the fluid, then you should really change the filter that comes integral into a replacement pan. Ask THe large one, he now knows about them Bodsys Brake Bible

Independent while in warranty makes sense too. Unless you have a fault that requires a dealer to do a warranty claim, an independent can service your D3 just as well if not better (as long as they have the right equipment, knowledge and passion for LR of course).
