Fading dash surface in my D3

Anyone noticed that the soft surface on the dash is getting very dry looking and a bit whitish?

Mine is starting to look "faded" and I wonder if it is needing replacement under warranty. Is this a result of our hot sun? The D3 is only 8 months old so I wonder how it will be in a few years.

I would like to know if this affects anyone before I raise it with the dealer.

By the way the dash is only wiped with a damp chamois cloth to remove dust. No chemicals have ever been used.

Chris,
Mine looked the same but I coated it with Maguires trim restorer (?) and it has come up a treat.
If that affects the dash then I would be very surprised, trims used in cars would be subject to various tests for campatability with various chemicals they would come in to cantact with , and, conversly products meant for use on these areas would have been tested also.

Marking of Trim

PCH - Now that you mention it, I have noticed some white-ish marks on the door trim but not on the dash. I just thought that they were dirt marks but suspect that they are the same as what you are getting. I will try and Maguires and see how that goes.

Guys, I cannot find the post, but I think winger explained the white appearance and how to remove it. It is something to do with the way they moulded the plastic and some residue seeps out. It can be sorted.

I accessed the global technical site the other day and the whiteish residue on the inside of the doors was posted as a concern to customers. I don't have the reference with me at the moment, but I can and will post it later if no one else beats me to it just incase your dealer denies it. From memory it is caused by antioxidants ( i think) seeping through from the back. The dealers are instructed to wash it with a weak solution of water/washing up liquid to resolve, it goes on to say more than one cleaning session may be required and that they will only deal with this problem on vehicles brought back to them whithin 12 months from manufacture. Apparently it is more of an issue with the ebony interior.

I've got the whiteish residue on my ebony door panel and just wipe it with a wet chamios but the residue is still visible but I will try the washing up liquid to see if I can remove it.

My dash is more of a concern since no one elses seems to have posted the same concern. Dashes shouldn't need any chemicals to keep them looking new in my opinion. None of my previous cars have ever needed a restorer until now.

This problem is apparently caused by high ambient temperatures and humidity so it won't be a problem over here!!!!

The fix is one part domestic hand dishwashing liquid to twenty parts luke warm water applied with a clean soft cloth. Excess removed with a clean cloth soaked in clean water. Panel dried with a clean soft cloth!!

Think I will let the dealer do it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that peanut butter .........(no really) is the best thing to darken faded plastic bumpers and arches etc.
You rub it on let it dry then buff it up with a dry cloth.
Just try it on an inconspicuous area first and dont blame me if you get followed by squirrels Laughing

I use meguiars interior plastic cleaner, 2 coats gets it better than new. I understand the dealers do a specific cleaner for it also. My exterior plastic is kept in trim by any back to black type stuff.

Used loads of it at my weekend job (when I was at school) in a car wash behind Harvey Nicholls in London.

Made many a Mercedes, BMW or Jag dash look cheap and nasty with that stuff Wink

PCH: See what you have started!

In the absence of squirrels down-under, we might need to replace peanut butter with whatever it is that wombats like to eat, in their role as squirrel replacements.

No danger of them running too far after the car as they are not the fastest and they are nocturnal. On the second thoughts, there is a real danger that many could be crushed by passing D3s breaking down and then losing air from their suspension?

Maybe we could hand-over the D3 to suitably qualified wombats and let them worry about getting things fixed?

Oohhhh,

Not too satisfied with the LR Service Centre in Melbourne are you Question

I'm certainly not putting peanut butter on the dash. I'm going to leave it and report it at the next scheduled service. Noticed I used the term "scheduled" and not "unscheduled" because the D3 has been running now for 2 months without a visit to our LR Dealer Laughing This is a record. Previous MTBF was one month. Noticed I also used some ITIL terminology because the dealer used a nice ITIL term at my last visit when they told me they have identified the ROOT CAUSE of the problem. I was impressed Laughing
