New exhaust gaurds on 06 model?

Looking at the underneath of a 06 model D3 in the dealer, and it only had a a thin super saver!
but it had larger guards around the exhaust, which seam to cover it more.

Are these better? should they be fitted instead?
What other changes have happened?

These guards protruded below the standard spare wheel before (untill your wore them away off-roading) so with a space saver tyre these guards would look huge.

If they were made from a heat resistant plastic which had some flexibility that would have been better than making them out of fibreglass.

Re: New exhaust gaurds on 06 model?

Mercedes Benz Australia got hit hard by the media and consumers when their new ML class came out with a space saver spare. MB then brought in full size spares to replace the ones already sold and new models were replaced before the sale was completed.
I would really be suprised if LR used the space saver spare, especially being a genuine 4WD. To be out in the middle of nowhere (or even on the highway) and cop a flat ...... I'd hate to have a space saver then !

I can see your point out in Oz - in the UK, seeing as we're so densely squodged together on our little island we're probably never that far from an LR dealer or a Kwik Fit so it's not so much of an issue for us. Having said that, if I hadn't spent every last cent I had to get one of these beasties, I might have paid the little bit extra for a full sized spare

When they say space saver don't think of it as one of those silly looking thin things painted orange, it's not far off full size.

More of another cost cutting exersize not giving you a 5th alloy.

Any idea what they are made of?

If they are still fibreglass there will be more to grind away Rolling Eyes

if you reverse in Tesco's car park the first thing you hit despite PDC is a high kerb which missess the spare wheel, bends these plastic guards and dents the exhaust pipe.....so what are they for? Embarassed

The moral of the story is to never keep going until the wheels hit something - always stop when you think the end of the car is far enogh in - both forwards and reverse - I've seen too many cars with the front skirt scraped against a high kerb...
