Best rim size for offroading on mud tyres
With mud tyres seemingly unavailable for 18s at present, are 17s or 19s better for offroading on mud tyres?Clubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. ReMap, BSS., RLD Personalised SWP., Safari Snorkel, Faultmate, Three Musketeers & MUD

I would say 17 with Kumho KL71 or Cooper STT but it depends what you want. Some folk go for 19 and MTRs. Ask Andy.

I thought the achilles heel of D3 18" rims was that there are no MUD tyres, the closest you can get is an all terrain such as the AT2's or Pirelli ATR.
Do you know of any 18 MUD tyres , as despite numerous trawls of the internet over time, i still have not found any

As far as 18' rims go, it seems to be AT2s in Europe at the moment (things I wish I'd known before buying a second set of 18" rims), but this looks interesting for the near future:

LTZ's are still an AT not a MT tyre though

If you want to do serious off roading, 17" rims will allow for higher sidewalls with more sidewall flex when you air down. This will increase traction as the tyre will wrap around rocks and other terrain features much better. Also, if you air down below 10 psi, you will get a nice bulge that will increase flotation on loose ground like snow or sand.
I've got Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60-18 on my TDV6 and they are good, especially as an allround tyre. But if I had the means to get a set just for off roading, I would get 17" wheels in a heartbeat. The selection of serious mud tyres are better in this size, but the selection of rims is poor. Most people want bling twenties for these cars....
It's alreadt been said. 17's or 19's. For me it was 17's and STT's all the way. Rims are 10 a penny and the tyres are considerably less than MTR's.
Remember you will want 6 of them "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

That they did...I'm no tyre or offroad expert but the 17's with STT's worked well. And as DD said, bigger side wall, possibilities to get bigger footprint with lower pressures etc...all makes sense to me.
They are noisy though - I'm definitely not leaving them on all the time...The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
