Terrain response can (and is designed to be) changed on the move - the change is throttle response is normal and a feature of TR
To paraphrase the manual, change TR mode "before you think you need it, not after" no harm will be done, particularly driving in GGS on a surface that doesn't require it, other TR modes - especially rock crawl - can put unwanted stresses upon the driveline if the terrain doesn't warrant it's use

This also the reason why GGS is the only TR setting that doesn't reset after 6 or more hours to TR off. GGS doesn't hurt even if you use it on clean roads.
The D3 feels completely different like if you go from a V8 to a TDV6 (sorry I couldn't resist)
It will use a higher gear and drive more carefull like you would/should do on slippery roads.
The locking diffs will be on alert but not preloaded as in other TR settings. Roel

I think its more to do with the fact that in cold climes during winter, you'll need GGS on permanently and it would be silly to disable it each time you switch off

IMHO the GGS setting is useless in snow, both powder and compacted. The slope that leads up to my childrens old nursery was covered in snow a couple of months ago so I selected GGS as it appeared a lot of other parents had not made it up the hill. After selecting GGS at a point where it looked to be a little trickier the D3 came to a creeping halt, reverse and try again still in GGS same result, in the mean time a Subaru Tribeca came whistling past. De-selected GGS and powered up the slope with out any real drama(High ratio and 2nd gear). This situation arouse again last week when the Rawtenstall to M65 link road(East Lancashire) became"un-passable", I offered to pull out a medium sized panel van that had become stuck, wedged against the kerb. Got out the tow rope, selected GGS and attempted the recovery, nothing, the D3 squirmed to one side and then cut power. Again I de-selected the GGS programe, engaged Low ratio and 2nd gear light prod of the loud peddle and away we go, no problems. It could be a one off as per Andrew S's Auto mine stalls when over revved, it would be interesting to get other members feedback on TR settings. Club Exped trailer

Fundamentally all GGS is trying to do is stop the motor from applying unnecessary power to the wheels ....and thereby causing wheel spin. If you fail on any TR application then either the D3 as reached the end of it's physical abilities................ or it's you

For me its all about forward motion! If that means putting 6 piston shaped lumps in the bonnet then so be it. How many times have you seen normal cars(two wheel drive) wheel spinning up an incline but still maintaining progress? If TR kicks in and cuts power to the engine this momentum is lost and your back to square one, hence DSC off when attempting a slippy incline. On the other hand it could just be me being at driving in these conditions. Club Exped trailer

I'm not being personal ...but it's as simple as I have described. It's either the D3 isn't capable in the conditions you find yourself ...or it's your application of the available tech. Or to make it less personal ..It's me It doesn't really matter which. Do you see my point ? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
