South Africa 2009 Discovery 3 4.4 V8 HSE Auto Alaska WhiteDiscovery 3
From Overland Forum

Hi guys,
Has a lekker weekend with a lot of driving and ended up going through Ongeluksnek Pass into Lesotho and did a 4x4 trail in the area. Then yesterday we drove through to Tiffendel on Lundeans Pass and came back via Naude's Nek, then Mount Fletcher Matatiele and home to Durbs.( I don't exactly know all the details of the route since we were in a
convoy.) Was a lot of driving, very beautiful and nothing technical really save some minor rock crawling and a bit of mud. We also had a few lekker river crossings, but nothing deeper than the wheels and with firm rocky bottoms or concrete bottoms.

I did have some fancy electronics problems however (LR Content) regarding a mysterious "Transmission Fault with the D3." When in low range (but not limited to low range) and using my command shift mode and toggling my terrain response to drive a specific obstacle the error message would come up, tell me to stop safely, and would then lower the suspension. I would then have to switch off, turn the key half-way to let it run its diagnostics, and then start the engine and everything would be fine. The fault would kick soon after changing gear or switching to mud n ruts or gravel or rock crawling, or just for no reason at all in low or high range auto. I did notice that if I drove in auto (either high or low range) it would happen less often. After we hit tar it stopped and had no issues.

Luckily it was more of a nuisance and we just had to stop and restart, but I was not keen to potentailly have the landy lower its suspension while having a lekker rock under it at a soft spot.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this fault? Last year it came up once or twice and we had the guys at land rover check it out and their fancy diagnostics kit couldn't find anything wrong.

It was a bit of a damper on the sports because I was one of only two landys, living up to its perceived reputation...

Hi Wynand,

My D3 would give me a 'transmission fault detected, traction may be limited' every other start. Been back to the dealer's, they said to have done something about it and now it's once every 5-10 starts. I don't notice anything on the car, not lowering and I also don't get the 'stop safely' warning.
Dealer says they have no clue what causes the message.

BTW I'm jealous of all you guys having the surroundings to go greenlaning or touring off-road... I seem to live in the wrong country Evil or Very Mad

Maybe condensation/water in the transmission module? He should also check the condition of his battery.

Good point - I'd forgotten about that. There is new software (issued Jan '09) which you need to get installed for the rear diff-lock.
