Why low mpg for TDV6 ???

Hi there! I had my D3 for 2 months and was fine (apart of a replaced turbo unit!). After 2300 miles I stil get 16-17 mpg around town and near 20ish on te motorway. before having the turbo replaced, the mpg was the same. I thought that with the new turbo it will get better. But no! Stil very low. The car was booked to go back to the dealer Thursday for some checks.
Anybody has any ideea why this low mpg? I drive very carefully and don't understand why? I have even refuel it and calculate the mpg and is very similar with the one shown on the board computer.
Any comments and/or suggestions very much appreciated.

Driving with six passengers will increace the mpg. Try using bp ultimate i get 32 mpg on motorway. also check your tyre pressures.

Recently did a trip to London from Shropshire and back 7 up and averaged 27.6MPG using Esso Energy Diesel.

Average speed on motorway was 75 to 80 at times.

On my own I get average of 31MPG - slightly better with BP Ultimate but not convinced extra dosh per litre is worth it.

540 miles per tank on Esso - 560-570 with BP

Not scientific testing but observational.

The engine does take a long time to loosen up, I seem to recall 5,000 or more before mine started to get better. Getting the car to change at about 2000 revs as per BN's mantra does really work. My auto does 28 give or take unless I'm late for appointments Embarassed

How do I make it change gear at or around 2000 revs?

I haven't reset my mpg thingy since I bought the car 1300 miles ago, I do a 40 mile commute every day with 15 miles of this being 20-30mph stop-start and the rest being 85mph on the motorway. It's showing 27.4mpg. In regards to rpm I never rev it over 3k as there is no point, best torque is between 1.8k and 3k.

First 900 miles have yielded 26.5mpg for me (TDV6 auto) - lots of 70mph motorway but also lots of 30mph stuff too.

This is tons better (already) than my last vehicle

Ah but I bet your driving is around Kingston upon Thames in all that nice London traffic Wink That'll kill yer MPG.

Engine is designed to give good continuous speed MPG according to the specs. Long runs is where you will see the best MPG and also the engine needs to have done a few K miles too.

You are right Simon, mainly driving in Kingston and "enjoying" the traffic! I know it sounds silly, but I stil believe that there is something wrong with this car as I can never go over 20mpg.

So... head out on the M3, M4 or M40 (NOT M25 as its too busy) one day and fill up with Esso Energy (BP Ultimate if your feeling flush) Reset the Trip and use the 2,000 revs rule. If auto just take it easy.

Cruise at around 70 - 75 (your choice going over the limit of course and I would never condone this) and take a long run up to Oxford services maybe.

Check the MPG... should be around 27-30 in a RRS as its lighter and less like a brick at the front than the D3.

My driving style varies a lot depending on my mood. Sometimes I push it but mostly on the motorways I just cruise at around 2-2.5K revs in 6th.

See what happens then if all seems OK go back to whatever your driving style is Smile You'll just prove the MPG is OK or not.

cheers

If you back off just slightly at 2000 revs it will change up, the gear box learns this and mine now does it without thinking. If you are stuck in traffic a lot and at junctions etc it is never going to get good. There is a lot of inertia moving 2.7 tons! Do as Simon says I am sure you will then see the difference, plus the BN trick as I call it. After 23.5K its saved me a lot (when I'm not late)
