Entering a whole new world for me. I have seen lots of you using these on various events and think I am going to take the plunge. Globalsat BU353 seems the way to go for that bit, I'm stuck on whether UK Standard is enough for what I am going to use it for or would those in the know recommend the Premium version ? Any advice thoughts would be appreciated Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

I meant the Globalsat 353 seems the best of the USB GPS thingys that are available. The whole of the uk memory map either comes as a standard or premium which is also labelled V5 Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

Possibly the map scale? There's 1:50k and 1:25k available I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The Premium one only really brings you as an extra some aerial views; much of this you can already get from Google Earth, and better still in some areas from Microsofts Maps Live.
I just got the basic one at Land ranger scale 1/50k. I would like some Explorer 1/25k but the prices are out of my allocated "toy fund" budget.

Not anymore.....it was for quite a long time, but being a SIRF III based receiver it is let down when it can't see the sky properly and this is always going to be a problem in a 4x4 when driving through mountains etc
I bought a MTK chipset-based USB receiver 6 months ago and it works perfectly.....try and get one of these instead of a SIRF-based receiver as the price is pretty much the same and the performance is much much better.

Or try a Holox(not Holux) bluetooth jobby, I got mine for £15 on ebay and it is spot on. It picks up a signal almost every where including indoors near a window, acquisition time hot or cold is very quick. Takes the same battery as a Nokia phone and charges through a mini usb connector. Hi Ent,
How long does the unit last on one charge? I presume you can get a USB cable to charge on the move??
