If you want a basic audio setup from an iPod / iPhone the best way is a dock connector based audio output.
Many many companies do them and are at line level so you get far better sound. Volume is controlled by the head unit in the D3 and not the iPod, so easier to get a good level out of it.

Yes. Dock Connector one end and mini phono the other.
I use a 'Monster' one I bought in the US. This is a Dock Connector with a phone jack in it. Great as you can replace the phono lead if it breaks or if you want to use a longer or shorter cable.
There are many available.
Some that are for charging the iPod have a mini phone socket included so you get power and audio line level out.
Have a peek at the UK Apple Store (on line) and then seek places that may be cheaper or pop into your local PC World or other to purchase.

I use one of THESE You need to get a longer 3.5 male/male cable (I got one with right-angled jacks at both ends for a much neater result [RS Components]), but the wiring goes:
- line cable from Griffin autopilot to LR aux socket
- apple connector from Griffin autopilot to ipod
That means there is still only one connection to "undock" your iPod. The autopilot slots into the 12v socket near the driver and has basic prev/next track, FFW , RWD, play & pause controls within reach of the driver and, obviously, charges your iPod.
I left the excess cable to the iPod coiled and it sits quite neatly out of sight on the small shelf where the ashtray would go if I had one. Andrew

Andrew, how do you find the sound quality with that? Reason I ask is what I find using normal 3.5 - 3.5 male male aux lead my ipod on max volume just doesnt sound anywhere near as loud as it does in my wife's car, or in previous cars of my own.

Loud enough! I did try a "house" (rather than car) docking station from Logic3 and that wasn't loud enough at all - even on max- so I think I know what you mean. With this, the wife and kids can easily embarrass me by sticking a trashy pop song onto Vol 20 and winding down the windows. I do like to play The Editors nice 'n' noisy, but I don't normally need to go above Vol 16 to do so but maybe you like your ears to bleed?
Just a thought - you haven't got the volume limit set on the iPod, have you?
P.S. Just remembered - the Autopilot has a "hi" and "lo" switch. Guess which I choose? It must be to overcome this problem. Andrew

Hi Guys,
I use a 3.5mm to dock connector similar to the picture NeilD posted. This is the only way to get good sound which as indicated before is controlled by the D3 head unit. I bought about 4 on eBay and have them connected to my stereos as well as in the Disco. Volume level is almost the same as the radio or CD and the sound is excellent.
Cheers, Laurie

I use this one from apple...
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB129ZA/...MjE0NTAzOA
with a 2xphono-3.5mm adaptor and cig lighter usb charger.
Perfect (line level) audio output, it charges, optional video for the screen, and it works with the iPhone 3G. 2005 D3 HSE

Am I right in thinking that with the LR ACM you can only control the tracks from the steering wheel, you can't choose say which album to play? If you still have to use the iPhone to choose your music, I can't see what the advantage is over a £28 lead?
I only ask because I wanted to get the LR kit when it included the holder, but now it's just a dock connector on a lead, I can't see how to justify it? 2005 D3 HSE

Until i find the 'best' solution I'm currently using the Logic 3 cable above. I've tried a Griifin FM thingy but the sound is nowhere near as good.
Question is if you are using the dock connector to LR Aux in, is there still a way of charging the ipod while doing this as all the chargers I have seen use the dock connector.
The sound I have now is brilliant by the way. Badda bing.......How you doin'?

I was just using a 3.5 male to male lead via the aux, and the quality was fine.
But seeing the device mentioned by Andrew Hebron above, I bought one on ebay. Great device, now I can charge the ipod as well, and still only have a neat one plug solution. Good spot Andrew (just for the record, no apparent difference in sound quality)
The only flaw I can see, is that the fwd and rwd button only skips tracks, you can't choose an album without going to the ipod itself.
