My first real emergency in the Discovery 3
This evening 1/3/06 I got a call to go out to the beach off Blackpool. Apparently some boys had been playing football on the beach and one of them broke his leg.
It was pitch black at that time as it was 1900 hours and there was no moon to light up thearea.. A paramedic crew had walked out to the patient but it took them nearly 25 mins to reach the boy. He was about 3/4 mile out . The tide was on the edge of turning. They called me to attend.
As I got to the slip way towards the beachfrom themain road I slipped the dial into sand mode and changed down into low gear. I had my blue lights on but did not know where the crew and the patient was.
On my ambulance radio the paramedics called to say they could see me and to drive forward and start bearing left. I drove through a loft of soft sand and shallow water pools. After about 2 mins I could see a light in the pitch blackness ahead. As I got nearer my headlights picked out the flourecent of the jackets of the paramedics by the edge of the water.
When I arrivedthe lads had put the patient on a long board. We opended the tail gate and closed down one of the rear seats. This enabled the paramdedics to slide the long board onto the Landrover. One of thec rew was able to sit in the other seat and give pain releif to the boy. The other paramedic sat up front with me and we gently drove backto the mainland.
I then continued up the slip road until I found the ambluance parked on the main road near some sand dunes. The patient was transfered onto the ambulance and the boy was then taken to hospital siffering from a frac leg and hypothermia.
The Landrover Discovery 3 was the perfect vehicle for this job both for the travel in the soft sands and deep water ruts and for the smooth ride the patient had back to the mainland.
Very impressed with this choice of vehicle for my work

Fantastic story!
Had you done practice runs on the sands before? What consistency are the sands? With the tide turning, I would have been worried about getting stuck!
