Transfer box - how hot it can get?
Hi,
I had front shaft transfer box seal changed recently and while checking for the oil leak I have touched the transfer box after driving on motorway. The box was hot that I could not keep my hand on it.
Is it normal? Anyone has got experience of the box temperature?
I've noticed that the cover is ribbed most likely for cooling purposes so some heat must be produced there .
If that is normal, then - will putting the skid plate covering the box make it getting even hotter due to lack the air flow?
Comments please.
J.D3 XS Manual - gone
Mine gets hot too - and I found out for the exact same reasons as you. I think the D3 monitors the transfer box temp, so unless you are getting a fault message you should be OK.Previously:

Better? Dr. Ian Malcolm:

well sort of stapldm...after a long run you did get heat coming up through the the hatch under the drivers seat warming the backs of your legs as well
mind you that was probably also heat from the gearboxes
top of the dash got quite hot around the windscreen vents as well.....but it was hard to drive with one cold hand on the transmission tunnel and the other on top of the instrument binnacleend of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I had a oil temp gauge on my defender transfer case . It would get as high as 120 c under heavy load
