I bought a ten months old disco 3 GS last February. From day one we have had a problem with it. The first time was when I stalled it, tried to start it again and there was nothing, just the lights on both dials after the system check notification. I contacted the dealer, who we have known for years and from whom we've bought a number of LRs. He thought it was us not being used to the system check. It was OK for a few months then the following started to happen.
One of us would drive somewhere, park and leave the car. On return, the key was put into the ignition, and turned part way. The system check notification would come on, as would lights on each dial. Once the notification went off the key would be turned all the way but there was nothing. The engine would not start and the the lights on each dial remained on. Turning the key back to off and then on again would have the same result. The key would have to be removed completely, wait, then start the process again and the car would start normally.
Our concern apart from the fault is the danger. This has happened when I was halfway out of the drive, at a petrol pump and at a busy junction. If it happened on an unmanned crossing I could be dead!
The car has been back five times now. It's had all the wiring checked and a new ignition only last week. The dealership has bent over backwards to solve the problem but are stumped.
The final straw for me was yesterday when it happened three times in one day! I contacted the dealer again and he's contacting LR. We have no confidence in this car now, no-one seems to be able to fix it or even offer an explanation.
Any ideas?

Mmmm,I'm assuming dealer has checked communication of both your keys with the immobiliser system? Does this happen with both of your keys?

Yes, it happens with both keys and now we've just had a new ignition and new keys.
I have videoed it happening and just sent it to the dealer. I am presuming they've checked the immobilser but why would it happen intermittently then start the way it does?

There have been a few starter motor / starter solenoid faults, that can be intermittent, but a good dealer should have checked for these, and the simple things like loose battery connections etc. I would have thought.

does the car just cut out or stall ?. have you got an auto. If you are stalling a manual and then it wont start (tunr over) it could be the starter motor
i had an intermittent fault which sounds similar to yours in that the ligths etc would come on but nothing would turn over. a couple of minutes later the car started OK. about 2 weeks later the starter motor packed up completely. But it sounds as if yours just dies whilst the engine is running then wont restart ?
can you post the video ?

is this because the car stalls, or are you stalling it ?
However !!!, if its the starter motor the dealer should have picked up on it straight away. when I told my dealer about the initial problem they immedeatly identified the starter motor.. Duncan

No, it's not because the car is being stalled, nor is it an auto. I was making the point that it is dangerous if it DOES stall.
What happens is that the lights on the dials come on but the engine will not start. It's not the starter motor, as this has been changed. It's not the ignition, as this also has been changed, as have most of the electrics.
The dealership is waiting for a reply/solution now directly from Land Rover.

When you say " doesn't start" , do you mean doesn't crank over either ?
Do manual boxes have a clutch depress/crank inhibitor( incase you're in gear ) to
stop the starter motor engaging unless the clutch pedal is depressed ( many makes do thesedays ) ?

It is completely dead, absolutely nothing except the lights. And we always depress the clutch before starting any vehicle as a safety measure.

My 2005 doesn't have the clutch depress requirement. Can't speak for later models though.

PS: The reason I know is that I loaned my D3 to a friend the other day who has become used to driving an auto. It frightened the life out of her as she tried to start it in gear and it moved towards her garage door. The Bearded Dragon

I did that with a Europcar rental Ducato diesel van last year.
The damn vehicle moved half a meter before I got on the brake
and clutch ...... hell of a lot of torque !
Back to topic ........ well, no switch fault there, since no starter motor / clutch circuit.
Intermittent faults are hell

just an update.
I contacted trading standards who said that the dealership had been given enough opportunities to fix the car and failed. They now need to look at replacing it with 'like for like'. The dealership are looking into this.
To make matters worse, the car has since failed to start on me twice more. Once when backing out of a car parking space it stalled and wouldn't start. This was on a busy Saturday and I blocked the way out of the car park. Thank goodness it eventually started. Goodness knows what would happen when leaving our driveway. I'd probably get potted - I suppose something would be done then!!
