Advice on detachable tow bar please - [Sorted- Disco3 rocks]

My 57 SE has a detachable tow bar that was already fitted by the previous owner when I bought it.

I have not used it yet but have just bought a clamp on type bike rack.

Looking at the instructions in the manual (p200) it says that once the tow bar is installed, the green knob should cover the red indicator, the key can then be rotated counterclockwise to lock, removing the key.

No matter which position the key was in, the towbar still snapped into place but the red indicator still clearly visible. Also no matter what position the key is in I am still able to either pull out or simply rotate the green knob to remove the towball. The key would not rotate into a position where it would come out. Shocked

Several goes and a good spay with WD40 and I have now managed to snap the key off in the lock (just enought to get a pair of pliers on the end!) Big Cry

Please can you advise if there is a knack?

If I am making a school boy error?

As I am going away, Once snapped in, am I safe to drive with the rack on in this state?

It seams secure (18 stone jumping up and dwn on it and it does not move), Do I just need to make sure I put it in the boot if I park?

Any other help?

PS I do have the spare key, if I can get the barrel of this lock to rotate to a position where it will release to key

I have tried to show the extents of the keys rotation in either direction (about 1/3 of a turn) but its not very clear.
Don't worry..... it only seems Kinky the first time you do it!

I think it may be that the small 'pin' on the towbar hasn't located correctly, when it does the green handle covers the red part. Once the red part has been covered, the key should turn and release. I dont think this is new news, as it really is just confirming what you already know. As a suggestion, why don't you see if the pin is working as expected with the towbar off the the car. This way you will know if it is the mechanism itself, or the hole is blocked preventing the pin from locating (I am assuming there is a hole!)

good luck
