Correct suspension heights

Does anyone know what the correct normal mode suspension heights should be for the D3? i.e. distance measured from the centre of each wheel to the lower edge of the wheel arch directly above?

Thanks,

Andy

Haha, great minds and all that!

My D3 was too high at the rear after a height sensor was replaced recently at the dealers. It's all nice and level now though. Plumped for 470mm ride height for normal which "looks" right, although I'd still like to know the official values.

If you calibrate it too low then it bounces off its bump stops in access mode and goes to extended.

It's a fickle thing to get right though. It's a case of measure, adjust, drive around, measure again, adjust again and repeat until it's all settled nicely.

How did you find it?

Andy

p.s. 3 flash indicators don't work on mine. Go figure!

Hello Methley and Wiggs,

I am also a MSV-2 owner now.

I just started playing with it yesterday when I got the power back in the car.

I just tried some small things like the 3 flash indicator, that doesn't work for me either. If I called the CCf file back from the car it is in there as enabled but it doesn't flash 3 times.

I put my Service indicator on as it was turned off and that looks like its working as it is recalculating some numbers after writing it to the D3.

I didn't play with the height yet.

I doubt you will find the definitive values for the 'normal' suspension height for any vehicle as this is set up by VIN for each motor at the factory. AIUI This is why you have to input the VIN into IDS if you want a truly accurate setting. The best you may find is a 'normal' height setting range of figures i.e. between 'x' mm and 'y' mm.

The VIN input on IDS is for session logging only which is why you have to put it in right at the start, else they would just read it from the car which they then proceed to do and moan if its different from the one you started the session with. Shocked

The calibration values are of course unique to each car as it is the job of these values to compensate and adjust for the cars built sensor fit & link tolerance to obtain the same fixed mm height from wheel center to arch on every car.

After calibration each car should be exact to within 3 MM IIRC.

It is this fixed measurement that I believe Methley is seeking and it is indeed around 470mm.
It is published for earlier models that are also calibrated uniquely in much the same way.

If we cant find it actually published, what i might do is run the IDS calib on my D3 a few times and measure as accurately as possible the resultant measurement. They should all be fairly close and the same across axles so we should have a fair idea of the acceptable measurement range and calculate the average value.

What i have discovered during my looking into this mode control stuff that might help, is that for calibration of sensor heights the EAS ECU is first placed into a special Calibration mode. Under which i guess it auto adjusts to newly written in values. Must have missed this first time round.

Obviously this new feature along with tight tolerance and manufacturing mode is now in our software and owners will of course automatically get this with our next release Thumbs Up

That might be why I found it to be so fiddly then. The suspension doesn't always move to the new calibration value, or it adjusts after 30 seconds or so. Hence why I went for a drive after every adjustment to get everything into its new position.

Hopefully the patch will make it easier.

I'm not sure if it is any use to any of you, but I have the following as ground-clearance heights:

ACCESS 135mm
STANDARD 185mm
OFF ROAD 240mm
EXTENDED 285mm
SUP-EXT 320mm

But I'm not sure what the lowest point on the car is to measure these against! On mine it probably isn't where it is supposed to be any more, anyway! If you do happen to know you can probably convert these figures?
