I want to remove the steering wheel as its slightly out of line. I've seen the 2 retangular holes each side and the meatal rods inside. Do these hold the air bag, seen other car makes with similar set ups. Is the steering colume multispline or hexaganal like fords used to be ??
I would appriciate any info, thanks

Unless it's a mile out, I think you'll find the splines are too coarse for fine adjustment. Also steering angle sensor would need re calibrating. Probably best left to the experts* (adjusting on track rods to centralise wheel),whilst maintaining correct toe at front wheels......*Note, not all dealers are experts BTW.

Adjusting on the track rods knockes out the steering (ackerman principle) geometry.

Why? You would need to lengthen one side slightly and shorten the other by the same amount, to centralise the steering wheel. That's how it would have been set up at the factory. Rack and steering wheel centralised(including angle sensor), and front wheels at correct toe settings.

You start off with an equal number of threads at both sides of the car. Take your reading then adjust both sides equally again untill your at the correct setting.
You can set up your tracking with the threads uneven if you want, but you'll find your tyres rubbing off on the edges after a while. Probably find the tyre squeel when you go round tight corners as well..

camelrock, I doubt whether any Land Rover is built to such tolerances as to have EXACTLY equal threads on each side, but it may possibly have started out like that, IF they built it accurately . Are they equal now? Probably not, because someone has probably played with them and got it wrong (as they did with mine initially) .So it needs to be corrected . You won't be able to get the right adjustment on the steering column splines alone, as I looked at this when mine was adjusted incorrectly, now corrected BTW......Something I've learnt through bitter experience, there are tolerances set by LR, and tolerances set by other motor manufacturers, two very different animals I'm afraid.
