Reliability - have I just been unlucky?? |
|
Hi, I've been following this forum for a while and found some really useful stuff - you're obviously a well informed bunch!
Anyway, this is my first post as I wanted to canvas some opinions.
I bought my 54 plate D3 about 16 months ago with 45k on the clock & I love it - it's the perfect car for my family & I'd like to upgrade in 6 months or so, but I'm put off by the number of niggly issues I've had.
Problems I've had are:
- failed front wheel bearing
- failed air suspension compressor
- failed rear boot latch (new part was £19, total bill was £250 - seems LR forgot to design in a remote boot release if the latch fails!)
- current faults are parking brake sounds like it catching on something when applying and there's an alarming screaming sound from somewhere under the back when you remove the ignition key (any help on this appreciated - I might post under a seperate topic)
Add to this 2 routine services + new brakes all round and I've spent £2k+ on the car since buying it (mostly at a specialist independant, not main dealer). Much more than I anticipated when I bought a 3 yr old car.
I this typical of other's experience or have I just been a bit unlucky?
I did wonder if it might be because mine was an early car and there were still some unresolved issues after launch.
Cheers, Sunny Jim

sounds like the screaming is the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake). Have you got a manual or auto.
if you are handy with a spanner, you can do the EPB and the pads quite easily. take a look in the maint and mods section for details
had the brakes been replaced before you bought it. My first set of brake pads lasted about 25K and second changed at 40K, I think !!, so you may have just been unlucy Duncan

sunny jim,
Have had a lot more than that spent in my first year with 54 plate. I would strongly advise getting yourself an extended warranty then it doesn't hurt quite so much and lets you get on with enjoying the D3 without having to think "what will go wrong next"
Welcome to the forum by the way.

It's a manual. The brakes had been done before I got it (I had been warned D3's were heavy on the brakes, so was prepared for some expense in this area), but I had new brakes about 2 months ago (pads & discs on front, pads on back) - think I'll take it back & ask them to look at the back ones again. Maybe a bit of adjustment will sort the problem.
Cheers.

pads all round cost about £80 from "TheLargeOne" (Yeovil LR) and you can change them in an hour of so
if its a manual then I beleive the EPB is automatically applied so it could well be the EPB squeeling.
if they didnt replace the rear discs then they most lijkely didnt adjust the EPB shoes etc. Duncan

I had ruled out the EPB as it seems to happen even after the EPB has been applied, but looking around the forum at other people's comments I think you're probably right.
A trip back to the garage becons!
Cheers for the help.

Alright Jim, welcome to another Hertfordshire lad !
Which independant do you use ? (PM me if you want to keep it quiet !), 10ForCash on here does mobile servicing/repairs - although he lives up near Derby, he will travel down this way..........and all for way less than you'll pay at a main stealer.....and possible less than the Inde's want !

Hi Jimbo,
I've used Aylmer in Bell Bar & to be fair I've no complaints with them, they've always lent me a car when mine's been in and even did battle with my warranty company when they refused to pay out on a claim.
10ForCash has been recommended by a few people on here so maybe I'll give him a go next time.
Cheers.

Jim,
I was beginning to think the same with my 54 plate D3 HSE.
I bought mine last October and I reckon I am near the £3000 mark spent on it since purchase. I bought it cheap as I knew it needed the big cambelt service (105K miles) and I could see that the front discs (and pads) would need doing soon.
However, what I hadn't expected was:
1 injector
Rear brake pads
Diagnosis and cleaning of rear electrical loom connectors
Rear anti roll bar bushes
Front arb bush shims
Front inner track control arm
Drivers seat tilt bracket
1 egr valve
4 wheel alignment
Spare key
Blocked sunroof drain tubes
Air suspension drier
Car now needs a new suspension compressor and they are on back order with the factory - earliest due date is 16th June.
I also purchased a new smooth leather steering wheel but that wasn't a necessity.
It has been the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned (and I've owned 20+ cars) but also at times the most rewarding. This forum, the people I have met through it and the knowledge shared has definately contributed to the reward of owning it and I am sure this wouldn't be found with any other manufacturers 4x4 vehicles.
I was contemplating writing a 'my D3 expereince' log to help as a sort of buyers guide - just to prepare people for what can go wrong. I guess the above words has kind of covered it!
I can definately vouch for 10forcash as well.

Hi John,
agree with your sentiment - great car, shame about the (seemingly endless!) problems
Just out of interest - was the new wheel easy to fit? The surface of mine is disintergrating badly and I'd like to change it too.
Cheers, Sunny Jim

Jim,
Yes, the steering wheel was easy to fit once I had managed to bend a piece of wire correctly to get the airbag released. Check out the smooth steering wheel thread as the photo's on it are invaluable. There is quite a few pages to it now but there is some useful info buried within.
The thread is here:
