When driving to the cinema last night . we were in town doing about 20mph and there was a very very large bang . It sounded like it came from under my seat, at first i thought it was one of the air tanks or an air bag going off but no signs of any damage and no error messages
Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be I can resist everything except TEMPTATION

Not trying to be funny, but did you check your mirror for any signs of carnage on the road. The D3 is a big beast and it would not be beyond the realms of possibility to run over a fairly large animal without seeing it - especially if it came to the car from the side.
I can tell you that even a fluffy wuffy bunny can give a serious knock / bang under a car - usually at the drivers or passenger footwell.
I hope you're not one of these 4x4 owners that everybody writes about - you know the ones who take-out kids and pensioners with their death machines

If it was an animal it was wearing a Cemtex belt or similar The noise was VERY Loud , there was no bump as if you had hit or driven over anything, as i said it was just like a gun had been let off in the car I can resist everything except TEMPTATION

I once drove over a sealed plastic drinks bottle and that gave a good bang. Even a large (family sized) crisp bag, rolled over in the right way can sound like a 12-bore going off under the car...... Just trying to make you feel better about your car. If it was that serious, I think your car would have been telling you something - somehow

Sounds like hopefully some sort of road kill / debris.
The alternative would be expensive mechanical or airbag pre-tensioners.
Either way- I would have a good look around the underside of the car to discount road impact.
I've seen the damage that even small creatures can have- a poor wee pheasant flew into the radiator of a friend's new Saab conv and caused £2,000 worth of damage.
Mind you - I ran over a stoopid pheasant on Sunday, and all I heard was a soft 'plop'. Annoyed the 'ell out of children and wife, but I didn't fancy ending up in a ditch because some daft bird hasn't read the Highway Code... Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

I hit a pheasant at 50+mph about a mile from my home on my 1st day with the car. I felt the steering shudder and heard the bang. Once in the drive, I didn't want to get out in case I had broken my new car. A couple of feathers stuck to the front fog lamp surround and that was it! Whew

I have a feeling it could be the pre-tensioners as TFC said earlier, there is no way any road kill or rubbish on the road could make that sort of noise I can resist everything except TEMPTATION

My first D3 went bang - it was the compressor that had exploded, silica beads and bits everywhere and the noise afterwards was close to that made by a chicken, being throttled, underwater, whilst also protesting at being stapled to a punk rocker who was demonstrating his need to cross the road - chicken styleee and singing a few lines from the Sex Pistols....
But then you'd notice if that had happened wouldnt you? D3 HSE V8...
