Locking Wheel Nuts

The locking wheel nuts are proving to be a bit of a problem after the salt from the roads. For those of you who have not needed to take off a wheel, you may not know that the top of the locking nut swivels and the key has to turn and fit in the groves.

Rust is stopping the tops from turning and if force is used to turn the top before undoing the nut, it can twist the top off and damage the knurls on the lower part making the nut very difficult to remove.

They are also prone to going very rusty on the shiny surface. I think there is to be a recall on them, but have not seen it yet. LR have already recalled the locking wheel not remover on some vehicles already as it wasn't hardened.

I believe if you call in at your dealer they will swap them over whilst you wait as an edict has now been issued.

Are all the keys marked 'L' affected, mine has 'L' stamped on it several times?

My handbook also says that there is a serial number on the wheel key and to write it down in case you need another. I have no serial number on the key or listed with documents that came with the car. In fact, most cars I have bought come with a array of key tags with all sorts of codes on them. I got nothing but the key (just the one, extra key fob on its way) and that's it. Am I missing anything (inc valet key, glove box key, emergency key, radio code etc etc)??

By serial number they mean the "L", as for some reason they don't record this information with the vehicle records Confused
