The CAN BUS and how it operates? |

Hi, can anyone help me with this please? I am trying to understand the workings of the CAN BUS but have a few questions.
Firstly, is it fibre optic or copper cable which it works on?
Second, is the the CAN which carries control signals to tell other modules what to do? i.e. big 12 volt cables to modules full of relays & transistors etc which are switched by low voltage signals on the CAN
Last, Would I be correct in thinking it is a bit like a common bus on which all the connected modules can see what other bits are doing? If so, what would be the way of seeing what's happening on the CAN ?

1) CAN is copper twisted pair which runs point to point between devices, and is terminated with 120 ohm resistors at the two ends
2) Correct - although there are multiple CANs at different speeds, plus an optical MOST network for the infotainment system
3) Yes - to see what's going on with a laptop you'd need a CAN 'dongle' plus network analysis/monitoring software 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
