Why are my lights illegal?

Hi All, I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out here Bow down

When I collected my new orange toy I was informed by the dealer that the top roof lights had been disconnected as they were not road legal (in fact they were still connected but I guess that was just an oversight by them).

So, what makes my lights illegal?

Is it just the fact they are roof mounted. I assume not as you see many cars and lorries with roof lights
Is is because they are using a high rated bulb?
or is it the dealer just not knowing what they are talking about?

Cheers,

Ian

As far as I am aware they are for off road use only and would only be illegal if you were to use them on the road

If they are now illegal, it will no doubt be some EU arseaboutface legislation Evil or Very Mad
If they are not using a higher rated bulb, i'm sure you could rectify that Wink
If it was a LR dealer, there is every chance it is utter b Censored s, (unless it was a site sponsor Whistle ) Rolling Eyes

Feed them by a separate switch and they are fine, if the dealer had them wired into high beam then that would, I think, be illegal - even though many lorries on the road have roof lights wired that way, guess not for the MoT Whistle

Lights over a certain wattage (can't remember off hand whether its 55w or 65w) are illegal to use on the road but provided you can isolate them with a cabin switch you will comply with construction & use and lighting regs ....you don't have to have them disconnected Thumbs Up

Yup - that's correct.

It's also part of the reason why LR fit a separate dash switch for the Driving lamps - so you can switch off Non-road legal lamps when on the road. The fact that most people simply forget to even switch them off is a different matter Rolling Eyes

As stated above, connect the roof-lights via a switch to stop them from always coming on with the high beam and you should be fine.
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thanks all.

The lights are operated by a seperate switch on the dash, so by the sounds of things I should be fine Thumbs Up

Appreciate the advice.

Isn't it the same reason they usually disconnect the winch before selling. That way when you (easily) re-connect them, they cannot be held liable. Thumbs Up

But as DG says, the lights are legal if operated by the seperate switch (and only used off road Whistle )

Actually, I think you'll find that the wattage of the bulbs in LR driving lamps makes them road legal Whistle If you uprate the wattage of the bulbs the driving lamps melt ISTR
