Engine System Fault

Whilst returning home today after a few days away with the tin tent, I was going up a longish hill on the M4 when the dreaded bong sounded which was accompanied by the above message!

There was a noticeable lack of power but I made it the 15 miles home. The temperature gauge did not move from its normal position.

I bought some EGR blanking plates from this site some time ago so maybe it is time I fitted them!

The car has only done 23k miles and has anyone any other suggestions as to the problem please?

Owen

Engine System Fault & naff all go could be a dead turbo, exactly how it happened to both of my D3s within weeks of each other. Sad

Did you get the "i", Engine System Fault, if so, the likely culprit is the Turbo I am afraid. Myself, Ronp and a couple of others have exactly this, lack of power and sometimes when you turn off the engine it clears.

Its all to do with the Variable Vanes in the Turbo unit, they get clogged with soot and Jam, rendering the unit knackered. If it is the Turbo get it looked at soonest just for diagnosis

I could just be a random error and the ECU put the engine in limp home mode. If it cleared following a restart, it could just be this and not turbo, EGR etc etc... sometimes life is not quite so complex Wink

Dealer or tech with IDS can clear the faults easily. If they return, then its worth a further look.

Mine were cleared a few weeks ago for this same issue, no returns of any errors so far.

Totally agree, thats why I mentioned the switch off. If it does persist then TBH look towards turbo. However we can all speculate, and as Simon says get down to a dealer/technician to hook up diagnostics and all will become clearer

Of course Wink

Could be any number of things dramatic and not so dramatic.

Thanks for your replies so far Guys.

I have started the engine and the message had disappeared so as you suggested Simon, it may just be a random error.

Tomorrow I will take it out to see if the performance has returned. If the message is still not there, should I get it cleared by a dealer anyway?

I did take the precaution of getting a Warranty Direct policy when the LR guarantee expired so I may be finding out just how good they are in the near future!
Having read several threads on this site there seemed to be a waiting list for turbos, I wonder if this still the case?

Now Owen, not being a killjoy. Glad you have the issue under control, for the 1st 8weeks mine cleared too when restarting, but ended up in Turbo failure.

But looking at your original post, you said you were towing, Now the D3 being a clever little thing, could the transmission have got a tad hot, and put you into LIMP mode, been known to do this too.

fingers crossed whatever the outcome
