On the road at last

Picked it up today.... gave it a few big licks on the way home, with some guy in a V6 Vectra trying to keep in my diesel fume wake on the dual carriageway Wink

Initial observations after 20 miles or so:

Kick down is slow in coming on unless you floor it. If you do floor it, there is a very minimal amount of lag. Very responsive, particularly in the sport/manual mode.

Handling is awesome for a brute of this size/weight.

Finish and quality is soooooooo much better than what I've been used to. Even simple things like the new leather steering wheel (of which I notice some of you guys have replaced and implemented in their D3's).

Gadgets are quite good (for GS spec). The bluetooth functionality is good, bring up the data from your phone (ie last number, missed calls, phone book etc).

Someone mentioned about seat belt height being an issue.... I'm no jack and the beanstalk, but I've had no probs with the adjustment.... in fact, I'd say it was a mirror of the D3 positioning.

Had plenty of look driving home sat in traffic.... think a combination of the new Bali Blue and the new 19" rims, but it was certainly turning heads.

Overall, very, very happy with this purchase. I would highly recommend the D4 over the D3. I actually feel like I'm driving something waaaaaaay more up market and sophisticated than a Discovery. Dunno why - just feels like a class act on all fronts now.

Yeah, I mentioned that to the salesman about the adaptive box... he looked at me in a blank expression. Obviously not part of the standard LR training material Whistle

So I tried not to be a 'driving miss daisy' on the way home - note to ECU - I AM THE STIG Mr. Green

Nice Thumbs Up

What's the interior like on the GS, not seen one with cloth etc yet. Doesn't seem as basic as the old GS as you have 19" rims. front fogs etc.

Rear is almost identical... same little cubby holes for the 3rd row passengers. Luggage cover is new though. Everything else is different (well, in comparison to my 05 S. Cloth seats are basic, but decent nonetheless. Certainly a huge improvement in quality over the old cloth seats. The seats themselves are more of less the same but now with lumbar control. The biggest improvement is the dashboard, controls (incl steering wheel) and doorhandles. Nice matt silver finish to most things, and the dash itself is leather (or lookalike) instead of the cheap looking plastic on the D3.

Host of other little enhancements - mostly electrical. I would def advocate the bright pack if you're going for the GS.... the auto headlights I can't really live without. Also auto wipers and (for what it's worth) rear view dip. Fogs obviously add a touch of class as do the new 19" rims that I think look particularly cool.

One downside I noticed last night - the display where the Infotainment screen would normally be (for those with XS/HSE) is far too bright. You can't get it dim enough.... and that's with the variable dimmer right down to the extent where everything else is barely lit. Hope someone can come up with a fix for this as it's a bit off puting.

I'm varying it to be honest.... few rasps here and there followed by some conservative driving. Seeing as I'm a Scotsman, I don't want to use up all the free dealer fuel too quickly Wink
