still trying to finalise my spec for ordering
one thing i've never considered is an automatic. always had manual and always thought i'd stick with a manual.
there is a thread on here about problems with automatics on the d4 already but should i consider an auto??
it will be a 2.7 so from what i read the old but uprated box from a d3
so far i'm leaning towards manual for better mpg and albeit slightly, better performance.
could anyone who is a recent auto convert change my thinking or am i best to stick to what i know??
i see this as a persnal taste thing unless i'm missing something about the discovery auto box.

You're missing a lot about the Discovery Auto box, it's one of the best auto boxes around, but if you want pure economy (after all, that's the only real reason you'd really want a manual) then get the manual, otherwise once you've got the auto, you'll never look back, especially if you tow or do any motorway or city traffic driving or off-road or on road or anywhere in fact, just get the auto.
Manual will save you about 2MPG normally . Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi Dave
Had both, prefer the Auto (by a long way). Although didn't mind the manual when I had it.
Plenty of posts/polls on here to help you.

The D3/4 auto is beyond superb! The D4 box being somehow smoother & better than the D3...
I was a die hard manual man until I got the D3 auto. I now dread driving manual cars. Hope this helps! Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Had manual cars all my life including my first D3. Latest one i nthe stable is an Auto and it's sooooo much better to drive.
Personally I wouldn't have another manual unless there was some other major age / spec advantage . . . "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

D3 is my first auto and can't imagine owning it in manual; auto box suits the D3 so well. If the D4 box is as good as the FL2 auto (which i prefer to D3 auto..at least on tarmac) then you can't go wrong..but you'll want arm rests and that means HSE Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Last D3 was manual and loved it. My new one is an auto and only just after 6 months of living with it I'm really loving it.
Initially I could not get used to quick B roads as it took a while to get the gear I really needed out of bends, but slipping it into sport mode sorted that.
Since the remap, in normal D, the car is a dream and would not consider going back to a manual D3 now.
Excellent for tootling round town, on motorways and once you get used to it, on back roads.

ad, I think the 2.7 D4 is also available as a manual too.
Dave, I got my first auto back in 2007, and I was also a bit confused when ordering my FL2 (manual or auto?). Let me assure you that I've got no regrets till now. Especially when you off-road, I believe it's perfect!

HAving driven a D4 briefly on Saturday, (and travelled in the passenger seat for a bit longer) I would say you are missing out on the best bit of the D4 which is the 3.0 engine - it is so much more responsive than the standard diesel, and nearly a match for the V8 in normal driving (admittedly with MTR's RAI and Rack)
Nuff said really Craig

The auto box behind the 2.7 in the D4 is the D3 auto box (...26), not the upgraded box (...28 ).

sounds like I'm convinced!
it's the commercial I'm going for so only available with 2.7 .
on paper it should be the same (performance wise) in auto as my current Nissan Navara manual so think I'll giver it a go.
only trouble is thats another £1,300 to the extras list!! XC90 T8 R Design Pro

Hi DaveC,
If you're worried about the 1300 quid, go the manual.
I believe the auto box is very good, but mine is a manual and I'm *very* happy with it. The Bearded Dragon

the £1,300 doesn't worry me it's the other £7k worth of options already on my wish list it has to squeeze next to!
like a kid in a sweet shop with the options list
I'll probably go for it as I'm going off the 20" wheel option in favour of the 19", that'll be £400 towards the auto XC90 T8 R Design Pro
