Australia 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Chawton WhiteDiscovery 3
I wish I had found this site a few months ago...

I have ordered (no delivery date yet, despite ordering early May) a Disco3 SE TDV6, White/Ebony. This will replace my Falcon GT-P and the last of the two D1s in the garage.

I expect to set the D3 up for outback touring, and I see that the guys on this forum from Australia have been asking all the same questions as me (LR tank, front bar, what to do with the spare, which tyres to fit, etc). As it turns out I didn't have any answers you didn't have already listed and vise versa.

I learnt pretty quickly that if you want a draw/storage system in the back, an alternative is needed for the spare tyre. That lead me to Kaymar, and in a round about way to a solution for the lack lustre fuel capacity (Long Range Automotive).

The ARB bar seems to be the bar of choice based on the various postings on this site, although I confess to some confusion here. There are several postings indicating that there are no antenna mounts on the bar, but ARB assure me there are two. I only need one for the UHF as I am going to use the Kaymar bar for the HF. I guess I'd better go back to ARB - perhaps they have added mounts since you guys got your bars?

Has anybody attempted to mount a Codan 8528 HF (I tihnk that's the correct model number)? Where did you decide to put it? Is there a suitable space in one of the rear quarter panels?

Anybody had any experience with Trivett Land Rover Parramatta (Sydney)? Good or Bad, please let me know.

Anybody had any experience with Mannell Motors Thornleigh (Sydney)? Good or Bad, please let me know.

Anybody know where to get another style 1 18" alloy? LR price is over AUD1600 and that seems a bit steep to me.

Lastly, has anybody had pushback from their LR dealer for warranty work after fitting enhancing accessories? It seems likely that there will be a requirement to call on the warranty and it would be disappointing to be refused service as a result of fitting bars etc...

That'll do for now. I'm going to find some more gems on this forum....

Haggis,

Firstly, there are antenna mounts for UHF antennas on the bar itself. There is no mount for an HF antenna.

Secondly, if it comes to buying another LR OE rim, you're better off buying 6 performancewheels BB6 (the total cost being only marginally more expensive than a single LR rim!) in 17x8 and fitting STT's or similar.

I had the compressor replaced after having had the bar fitted and there was no mention at any stage that warranty would be affected.

 Have a nice day!

Jamo,
Thanks. I'll take a look at the performance wheel option.

Haggis,

Black Widow are doing draws for the D3 (BW900S).

http://www.blackwidow4wdstorage.com/

You access the spare wheel winch through the draw which has a hole in it. Be wary of the total weight of the draws which will impact on you GVM.

I personally built a set of draws with fridge slide out of Alcan Qubeloc and ply sheet with carpet. It weights about 35kg.

If you're going to set up for outback touring then remove the third row seats if you have them to save weight. They weight probably about 40kg. You will need to do this if you put in a set of draws anyway.

As for a Codan HF radio. I'm not sure of the size of the receiver but the rear qtrs are pretty limited in space. There a some cubby holes for storage but you can't mount much in there. It maybe possible to mount it along with a storage system.

As Jamo has stated get a set of Performance Wheels 17*8" or GMAX (M168) 17*8 wheels. At this stage only Cooper make a 245/70/17 to suit the 17" but you could fit BFG in a large 17" size if you get a rear wheel carrier.

Since you recently ordered your D3 did you option the rear e-diff? If you didn't see if you can change the order because it is well worth the $1000. There is no aftermarket rear locker for the D3 yet.

You have pretty much covered most of the aftermarket manufacturers with product. Roof racks are available by Tradesman Engineering and also one of the European brands (can't remember which one). I personally would not bother with the LR track system. Get a rack that bolts to the 8 mounting points. Roof load is rated at 70kg which is pretty low. I have a Howling Moon Rooftop tourer, Kaymar shovel/hilift jack mounted on the rack and even strapped 40lt of water on the roof and travelled carefully without problem.

Safari4x4 still hasn't appeared to get their snorkel to market so Jamo and I have opted for the LR raised air intake (not water proof but will help provide most protection).

Good luck.

PCH,
Thanks for the info/feedback. I actually ordered the Black Widow kit while at the National 4X4 show last weekend in Sydney. A mate has a set in his D2 TD5 and reckons he couldn't live without them now. Apparently the Black Widow kit comes in at about 40kg, and since the seats are around 40kg it all nets out nicely. How deep is the hole left by the seats? Maybe the Codan will fit in there.....

On wheels, I sent an email to Performance Wheels today, and noticed from their website they are in Sydney. Might go see them later in the week.

And yes I did order the rear locker (and rear air).

If I fit a roof rack it will only be for the swag, a rack sack with the soft light stuff, and a small gas cylinder. I am a strong believer of keeping the weight low on the vehicle. On that basis I doubt I'll exceed the roof load limit. I was looking at the Rack Master (Opposite Lock I think). I liked it because the it is basically flat (no sides) with a neat captive nut arrangment for securing the load.

Lastly on Safari. for a few months now they have been indicating it will be on the market 'later in the month'. Must be harder than they thought... I saw a posting somewhere else on this forum with photos of the air pipe between the guard and filter. It is perferated and the general view was that is to stop uncomfortable resonance. Do you know if either of the units (LR or Safari) retrofit that plumbing? I am not looking to go swimming, but I am looking for a reason to choose one over the other. May be the price will be the differentiator.

Norto,
Good feedback - Thanks. Are you using Trivett for regular servicing? Do they give you the warm and fussies that they actually know and understand the product? (Seems like a long way from home for you)

Haggis, You can get a nice flat rack from Hannibal also.

I eventually replaced the somewhat fussy stainless steel bits with a Thule system:

Thanks for the photos. Haven't heard of Hannibal down here in Oz, but it looks very similar (the rack proper at least) to the unit I was looking at here. And I agree the Thule 'feet' are much better.

The Rackmaster unit I was looking at mounted directly to the Disco3 roof (ie without the LR rails) and, if I recall correctly, in six places.

Better go back for another look...

Jamo, can you put me in contact with a shop that sells these wheels, and might possibly export to the USA? No one offers anything over here yet besides factory origional wheels at a really silly cost per rim.

Thanks,

Nathan Woods

Haggis, I've got the rackmaster and it's great. You replace the OE rails with the rackmaster ones that fits into the existing captive nuts in the roof and attached two more feet at the front that go into the captive nust hidden under the existing trim. It's is really easy to adjust.

Nathan, The website is www.performancewheels.com.au They should be able to help.
Very Happy

Jamo, Are you left with 'open channels' in the roof line? Perhaps bits of the original trim go back in? Thanks.

Haggis,

Yes you will be left with open channels but unless you are going to leave the rack on permanetly then don't cut the channel trim to fit.

I pull off the trim, fit my rack and when finished with the rack pull it off and put the trim back. I find the wind noise and increased fuel consumption enough for me to pull the rack off. Also my rack has mesh and is very close to the roof so you cannot easily wash the roof.

Haggis,

I didn't cut the trim per se, I drilled holes in it that correspond with the captive nuts in the roof.

When I can get my rack off, I will leave the 'feet' in place.
