Moving to Northern Beaches in December 2010 from UK
Hi Guy's,
Just got back from a 3 week recce in Sydney on a mission to convince my wife that Sydney is a better place to live than Birmingham UK (no really!).
Mission accomplished and now we're moving over December 28th to around Mona Vale.
Will be bringing our third child, the Disco3, so would be good to hook up with other LR Blokes as keen to understand the offroad scene there.
I see you all met up recently so count me in for that in the new year...
Got some various bits and bobs to do to the D3 when I get there though such as:
1. Speedo is in MPH/KM, this is fine to use but want to change to KM only. There's loads of KM Speedos for sale here so will get one and fit it in Sydney.
2. Car has a couple of bumps and scrapes but not going to fix before importing as Customs values the car and I have to pay import duty so it pays to have the car a little 'scruffy'. Can anyone reccommend a good panel beaters near enough to North Shore way?
3. I have the standard round plug trailer connectors, not sure what you guys have but most boat and bike trailers in Oz run the rectangle ones right? (I guess an adapter can be sorted).
4. Need to get A/C re-gassed cos I never use it here in the UK, can count on one hand the number of times it's been on.
5. Need to find an Australian DVD for my Sat Nav (hopefully it'll work there), see my other post.
I'm from Sydney but have spent 12 years in Europe so to say I'm keen to get back is a pretty big understatement!!!!

It will be a Welcome Back Home Robin,
Both myself & Caver live on the Northern Beaches.
Lots of questions there! Need time to think about the answers
You can buy a new disc for sat nav np, but I recall it being about $300!
There was on eBay a couple of weeks ago, older version went for $50 I think.

Hi Robin - welcome back! Yes, please do attend the pub lunch after you arrive. I'll answer what I can.
1) Speedo can be changed by dealer from MPH to KM. I can't recall if this can be changed by the trip computer information button on HSE's - but that could be the case.
2) Sorry - don't know. I would look in Yellowpages (http://www.yellowpages.com.au) for a start, or ask a dealer which they would recommend.
3) Yes - you can buy the adapter to 7 pin flat plugs at just about any car parts shop. Auto 1, Repco, Supercheap Auto, etc.
4) Re-gas of A/C is a pretty common job - almost auto-electricians can do it.
5) Agree with Rich - keep an eye on eBay and post a request here.
Cheers,
Rob

You had to convince of that!
Well I suppose it wasn't difficult.
Welcome Robin.
I use a panel beater in Brookvale who has done a good job and is flexibel for cash as well. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks for the response lads.
Biggest concern has been the Sat Nav. When I looked on Drive.com.au at all the Disco 3's and RR Sports I see there is no standard Sat Nav but the Range Rover's seem to have one similiar.
The UK has a touch screen to enter searches, it's pretty simple but very effective. Quite happy to pay for a new DVD disc even if it's $800 (that's one thing I have to get used to, high prices for everything motor related). I'll get some model numbers off my Sat Nav which is located under the passenger seat just to make sure it's the right one.
Was also worried about the baby car seat retention point that is unique to ADR rules but after checking I see that the UK D3's have the points as standard (on the back of the rear seats).
Truth is it would probably be a lot less hassle to sell the D3 here and buy one there but seeing as ours has never had a major issue in it's 150,000km's, we've had it since new and it's older than both my kids and taken us all around Europe, I just can't leave it behind...
Re: Getting my wife to Sydney, my major issue was 5 years ago I brought her back to show her around (she was pregnant with our first child at the time) but I stupidly took her to all my old single guy haunts instead of showing her the tourist and family spots.
For example I thought she'd appreciate a night out with my still single mates, kicking off at Clovelly RSL for cheap drinks (she couldn't drink though) then onto Coogee Bay Hotel to perve at Swedish backpackers and ending up at Harry's Cafe De Wheels for dinner via some dubious pubs in Kings Cross, all in all a great night....Or so I thought....
I'll keep updating on the 'adventures' I go through shipping the car out.
Cheers,
Robin.

Keep the wife away from anywhere else in Australia or she will never forgive you for Sydney. The flat plugs are used on sedans. Most things you pull will fit the black round plug. The white plug you remove to attach interesting things like trailer /caravan camera.Cooper S/Ts, Dynamic 17x7s, Rotronics 3 way battery control, Boab drawers, Polaris camera, Mitch Bros tow, 4x4Intell wheel carrier and cargo barrier, Obie's rear wndow protector, Windcheetah roofrack, Featherlite rooftop tent, Faultmate, Trakmaster Nullabor 17. Thanks for this, I was just referred to them yesterday so sent them a request. It looks like they have a map for my system (which is the Denso YIB500070 462100-8318 Sat Nav Drive).
Thanks for the help guys and look forward to catching up with you all in the New Year....

As you're only in Brum, to get the a/c regassed take it to this chap in just off the M1 in Nottingham, it'll be cheaper than having it done in Sydney I reckon. I've used him on my old P38 and current RRS, cost me £30 if I remember correctly and he's very very good. Rather than some Kwikfit numpty he actually understands how a/c systems work and can test / diagnose problems. He found faults with my P38 system after fully gassing it, which meant he had to 'ungas' it so I could get it fixed. He didn't charge me for the 1st session, so it cost me £30 for 2 gas sessions !
If you do call him, tell him the chap with the orange G4 challenge RRS gave you his name.
MikeBV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

Thanks for the info Mike, I will give them a call next week sometime.
Interestingly enough I also need the AC sorted in my Trackcar, an Ultima GTR

So I reckon they could have a look at that too...
