FBH - Don't shout but...
Most learned bretheren.....it's getting cold so now is the time to ask if anyone has an update on webasto remote control options or is the state of play as expertly posted in the wiki.
I've done site and www searches and seems that webasto have new products but offer very little detail and nothing on compatibility with D3 control system. It's hard to even understand the language you all use (CANBUS etc etc) but I'm getting there slowly and learning to swear in electronics - my view is if you can't put it in a bucket it's no use to anyone
I'm toying with the idea of DIY but I only need remote (and not timer) and being ham fisted am slightly bothered by the delicate soldering detail described. What's the current 'botch rate' amongst the the less adept of you
Any adivice much appreciated (I know of the TFC man but would really like to have a go myself!)
I have 10 thumbs (only 2 of them mine) and I managed to get it working I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

mmm -that sounds like a nice compromise to maintain my DIY ego. I'll think on...

Or you could do what I've done......and order a kit from Devon 4x4 !!
It cost me £130 (but I think the price has gone up by £10), the kit contains the 1533 timer, a pre-made wiring loom to plug into the timer, and a single cable (with the pin attached) to go from the FBH to the timer loom. Only took delivery yesterday, but it all looks well made - will hopefully get time this weekend to install.
Agreed, I could probably get the bits cheaper on eBlag etc...........but I'm a bit of a laxy whatsit, and if someone else has already done the hard work, then I'm a happy bunny !

hmmm - choices choices
Devon kit seems a bit expensive especially as doesn't include a remote
Wiggs hinted at alternative control but he's out playing with his new big orange toy. Perhaps when he's lost the extreme he might be persuaded to drop some more hints
so far the diy route (with TFC's delicate fingers involved) looking favourite

I have just installed mine to give remote operation on the cheap. I bought an £11 wireless door chime from Maplin and proceeded to rip it to bits to enable it to switch the Webasto timer on via a transistor across the timer switch. Range is a bit rubbish been mounted under the bonnet but I hope to improve this somehow (hopping on one leg always works).
BTW you only need to solder one wire as the other side of the switch is 0V (-ve).

I was going to do the full monty by making my own W-bus signal output but I don't have the time at the moment. I took a trace of the W-bus serial data using a storage oscilloscope if any electronics wizz kid wants to make their own (I was going to program a PIC IC to give the o/p). It seems the W-bus comms is one way only and contains a hell of a lot of bits on a 4us clock frequency.

understood the door bell thing and hopping on one leg...
I take what I think is called a 'watching brief' whilst those of you who understood work up the solution further, translate then post in a refreshingly jargon free script
Actually - this is just what I was hoping for so

Not the cheapest but nice & waterproof. Draws about 1aH / day so can be left on for a couple of weeks and vehicle would still start OK (hopefully!).
Can also be wired to call you when it's been nicked or turn on other things. Pretty sure TFC did a heated front windscreen mod which would be far more use than the heater to me...
Have just ordered one for the floating caravan to turn heating and to give me a ring if it's sinking so will let you know if it's any good!
Also a good quality keyfob remote if ebay tat does not appeal.
Edit - Having just implied ebay tat the gsm unit is on there at £149 inc vat rather than ex as above. But from same company so I'm excused! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GSM-Text-Remote-Cont...33568cd835Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!
