G4 questions
On my 08 G4 there is, in the top passenger glove box, the leads from a radio installation (Coax for the aerial, external speaker cable and also a power source).
Does anybody know where the power source is taken from and whether it has its own fuse somewhere. The source appears to be dead and before I started pulling the dash apart to trace the wire I was hoping somebody may know the answer.
Also in the passenger foot well attached to the side of the center console (the cover that houses the gearbox) there is what appears to be an RJ45 connection. Anybody know what this is for?

You need to speak to Richard (XTC) as he most likely fitted it!
You must have a vehicle that was used for promo or selections as the install's in the majority of the event vehicles had not got that far...
The power cable was installed by Veh opp's and should run directly back to the battery with an inline fuse holder in the cable under the battery cover. When the fuse is in this is perm live feed, not switched.
The aerial cable will run up to the rear of the roofrack and is a standard 50 ohm cable. It may still have the black aerial base fitted. If so this is for VHF (160MHz) and cannot be used for CB etc. If it's just the PL259 socket with a cover on then a CB aerial with suitable connector can be plugged straight in.
The speaker is a simple ext with 3.5mm plug for when the radio is mounted in the glovebox.
The CAT5 socket was the extension mic cable which plugged into the mic socket on the radio and the mic plugged in by the centre console. This will only be of use if your radio has RJ45 connectors on the mic. There should be a RJ45 plug in the glovebox.
I would imagine you have a huge hole in the back of the glovebox? If not the older 2006 radio must have been fitted for selections.
Hope that helps, good luck and enjoy the vehicle!
Richard.
Edit..Got your PM while I was typing this... Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Thanks for the detailed reply Richard.
I have found the fuse that you mentioned. It all looks connected and the fuse looks OK, so I will have to investigate this further. But at least I now know where the two ends are
I have already found the connection on the roof.
As I don't know much about these things I spoke to a few CB enthusiasts who have said I can use this for a CB. Can you confirm this is the case? When I plugged a borrowed twig in it all seemed to work ok and the reception was excellent - far better than my old setup.
I have also now found the RJ45 plug in the glove box so that now makes sense. Maybe I will run a LAN around the D3 at somepoint now I have the wiring in place
As far as the hole in the glove box, I do indeed have one but its fairly small. Not much bigger than the cables that feed through it. Certainly not big enough to lose anything in.

Hi Ian,
That's fine for screwing a CB twig on, thats just the socket. When no aerial fitted make sure you tape it up to keep water out the center contact. Should have had a plastic cap with it. If your not going to have the aerial on all the time I can send you a couple up.
Lucky with the glove box as with some we cut the whole of the back out as the newer radio's were a bit longer than the 2006 ones and needed to stick out the back a bit for the lid to shut.
Cheers, Richard.Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Well, they wern't mine were they! (Got a few new ones here if anyone has a G4 glovebox with the big hole in).Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!
Rich, I'm going to need a decent and discrete CB install for the H4H European Rally next year. Don't suppose...... You know, what with me passing through your neck of the woods fairly regularly. I'm thinking of getting the same head unit Ken has (remote fascian - can't remember the make/model at the mo) but could do with advice on a suitable (and short) whip for reasonable performance in open country over modest distances (not looking to catch the skip and listen to some knobber in Scarborough going on about fox hunting in his old Cortina) and cabling.
Beers are available I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Albrecht 6890 IIRC (well, thats the only one with a remote head unit)...
Should've got one myself... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeksnearly 4 weeksover 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

Hi Richard,
Many thanks for your help and advise
If you have a spare cap I would appreciate one as there isn't one fitted at the moment.
Ian, just realised there's likely to be something sat in my garage with your name on it; I very much doubt Mrs Do$h has developed the powers required to realise I meant to stick something in the post to you before I set off for this contract
Will sort it out when I get home tomorrow evening, so will be in the post Saturday and should reach you Mon/Tue. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Would be a pleasure! I'll look into some aerials, have all the cable, brackets etc here. Let me know when needed and come on over.. Is it to chat generally to all teams or just within your team? If the latter sure we could sort something a little better than CB Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!
Need a CB for contact with organizers and the rest of the rally (45 vehicles) but might not be a bad idea to chat about the options availabe for conversation between the members of Team Disco3 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
