30 MPG?

Having driven over 4000 miles in 3 months in my 3.0 TDV6 I have never manged to make the claimed 30mpg. I driven in a variety of conditions, motorway, country lanes, towns.
I've tried cruise control, freewheeling to junctions. I just can't manage it even with the most feather-weight of driving. Any thoughts...was the 30 mpg just an ad man's pipe dream or has anybody actually achieved it?
The car is brilliant and I don't really mind - I bought my wife an eco-VW Golf which gets 67mpg so I have a private carbon offset thing going on!
However looking at the next round of fuel price rises on the front pages of today's Daily Express; the £1.25 litre will be back soon! Should I get a special tune up?

did you read the rest of the story on the front of the express? the bunch of t Censored ts were scaremongering as usual...

the story actually says that it MAY reach 1.25 IF oil hits the same price as it did 2 summers ago.. Confused

the express is such a waste of paper it's unbelievable..

I take your point on the Express, I read it in the newsagents - didn't buy it!!!
However, 30 mpg, can it be done with a re-tune?

Experience with the 2.7 D3 showed that it took a few thousand miles before good economy started.

Holy Cow 33 MPG? Is that using the accurate method of miles and fill ups as opposed to the Tolkien-esque fantasy MPG indicator that exists in the computer just to make you feel better?

My computer says I'm getting 30 MPG over the past few days (long trips). If I depress myself by doing the maths properly (as I did today) I'm actually getting 24 MPG.

The computer is horribly optimistic. I don't have enough (and it hasn't fully loosened up yet, anyway) data for the D4, but my D3 manual averaged ~27.72mpg over 30k+ miles, the D3 auto I only had for many less miles, but the actual average was 25.82mpg. I probably do less long distance/motorway driving, so much of this is based upon A road, rural motoring.

The coomputer in my last car was around the same as doing fil up to miles, so no reason to suspect this one out by too mutch, it certenly drops to 28-29 wiht tintent

Some interesting replies. My car is an auto but 30 mpg has never happened, even worse if you take the miles traveled versus the fuel put in and use a calculator rather than computer! Maybe it wil get more efficent in time, maybe I should wear plimsoles rather than brogues!

I would disagree with that conjecture from my experience.

The D3 manual computer overestimated to the tune of 2.36%, the auto was 10.85%.

I suggest that this can vary very substantially from car to car.
