| steering rattle - 4th attempt by dealers to fix it !!! |

Hi I my d3 has been plagued by a steering rattle from new. It shows up on rough surfaces going straight, and on smooth surfaces when cornering & braking. I think it's also worse in the winter.
There have been 3 attempts to fix this - 2 involved replacing bushes & suspension items, the last was a TSB fix I believe on the steering column. Each time the vehicle was supposedly road tested, but rattled as soon as I took it up my rough track.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what else might be wrong here.
Last time I was left without the vehicle for 8 days and left with a courtesy car I cant legally or physically drive due to my disabilities. I am getting pretty fed up with this & Land Rover dealers to be honest, I think this may well be my last LR.   2007 TDV6 HSE 'Silver Lady'. With 'free' privacy glass LOL.

Have you contacted LRCS to express your displeasure at the lack of resolution by the dealer, they may be able to help and get you access to technical specialists  I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Mine is in for (what may be) the same issue. Rack manufacturer were supposed to send a bloke to check for oil contamination in power steering pump, rack and er, er something else . . .
Didn't show up at dealership so they took samples - long and short of it - I'm having a new rack, new pump and the aircon pulley fell off while they were doing the rest 
Could be the same issue - metal particles in rack oil, or steering pump ???

Lower/upper ball joints
ARB bushes
Lower steering coloum (sp?)
Inner track arm ball joints/Track rod ends
Seeing as the top 2 are the most common, i would suspect they have probably already been done, so would suspect the bottom 2.
Best bet is to jack it up yourself and shake the wheel from side to side, no doubt there will be free play in them... My D3 Build Thread

Hi Guys, thanks for all the helpful replies, I will ask the dealer to look at these issues. DG will try to get a TSB number & SJR can you post the link again - the current one does not seem to work.

Another problem that sometimes gets diagnosed as steering column problems is a failed body mount bush. If all the above yield a big, fat zero, it's worth having them check that the bushes are still intact. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

update - after exhaustive diagnosis (I showed the guy who picked the car up how it rattled) a faulty front diff is due for replacement. I am still not convinced this is the main fault but apparently after 27K the diff is full of metal particles. Thanks again for the other suggestions, I still think we will might be going down those routes, but at least the faulty diff explains the slight whine accompanying the steering rattle I heard from new......  2007 TDV6 HSE 'Silver Lady'. Well I had all those bits replaced and it turned out to be a knackered Universal Joint in the steering column that was the main culprit.
All good now, especially as it's wearing it's expo rack and ladder "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Hi all, I am still on the rattling front end saga, any further help appreciated, now its been to 3 dealers, I have had the following replaced:
front differential (found to be contaminated with metal particles)
Lower/upper ball joints
ARB bushes
Lower steering column (or the TSB related part not quite sure which)
Last time I went to Frank Ogg and had the Track rod end (driver side) replaced, which actually seems to have alliviated the most serious rattle, but there is still a distinct clunk going over rough ground & bumps & a quieter rattle coming from the front end & up the steering column. I seem to have multiple wear issues!!
Will suggest the UJ joint in the steering column next time, but I am not sure that can account for the 'clunk' when I go over bumps, and further ideas ?

My UJ caused just such a clunck, and I could "feel" rather than hear it on rough ground or on 2-3 points of the steering lock (but these did seem to vary in location slightly)
Changing all the other parts made no difference at all - apart from a few days driving a nice FFRR to Scotland and Back  "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Interestingly have had similar problem previously and again recently and was cured with replacement bushes & ball joints - however this time I'm left with a very loud "thunk" from the nearside (left) of the car on braking.
Dealer identified it, tried a few things and then basically got nowhere  Warranty company (LR own extended warranty) have authorised an independent 4x4 garage to deal with it - now isn't that a good advert for franchised dealers! 
Any thoughts on the thunk noise?

Personally , "I hate posting " Strange , I've got the same ...... "
My local & I have been scratching our headwith the same problem.In again this Friday & Saturday.Personally I think its the upper or lower control arm bushes.LH bearing is also shot , Rear Trail arms  , Steering off true by 15 degs to the left , etc etc.Track rod ends have been replaced , ARB bushes front & back.
Steering is nervous as over any sort of uneven surface , oversteer etc.
Mind you theres 220 Klms thou on the clock
