Help.. I think my engine just broke down..
Driving as usual today and had to overtake a tractor. Put the transmission into "sport" and passed the tractor. As I was alongside it I heard some knocking noises, but I thought it was from the tractor.
After a few meters I still heard the knocking noises, and as i applied a bit more throttle the noises increased.
As I pulled out of the road the noises continued to increase, I could feel vibrations in the car and I lost power, the engine died by itself as soon as I managed to get the car off the road.
Anyone else been in this situation?

Have you checked the engine for oil?

Checked it for oil one hour before this happened and after it happened, plenty of oil and no sign of leaks or any warning lights.
My biggest worry is that the turbo might have chipped a blade and it ended up in the engine.. It happened to me on an Audi and I try not to think about it, but that noise was very similar..

It says on your avatar that you have the V8 petrol though, so no turbo blades to shatter.... Peter, are you drunk? No, I'm just exhaused cos I've been up all night drinking...

Haven't filled it up for a while, think I was down to about half a tank when it happened.
But fuel was a good suggestion, I wouldn't have tought of that.
Any more suggestions? I'm just hoping for someone to reply that it's a known issue and a simple solution.
Just a little bit worried about having money left for my holliday in Costa Rica in february!

I think TLO is thinking contaminated fuel or blocked filter, if I'm right. Lack of fuel will cause diesel knock, lack of power and engine stall.
Does the engine start now or is it dead?

I see, would this cause damage to the engine?
Actually.. I have not tried to start it again after this happened. I was a bit paranoid in case it was caused by something entering the engine or if tha cambelt had come off. And was afraid that turning the engine over could damage it further?

If it's a bad fuel or fuel supply fault this won't damage the engine. Let hope that's all it is

I'm afraid not.. I've been away for a week and didn't have a chance to call the dealer where my car was transported until today.
An as it turns out my dealer is no longer a LR dealer, they sent all their LR-equipement away two weeks ago.
So they are now in contact with the new LR-dealer and hope to get the car transported to them this week.
The ex-LR workshop did try to start the car last week but it didn't start, they experienced the same knocking-noises as I had. The mechanic said it could be several problems, some more frightening than others.

Sorry, just struck me as amusing but then I'm easily amused, Seriously though hope your engine is OK and if it isn't, I hope your car's under warranty. Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

And after a couple of hundred meters the tractor overtook my again, a smile on his face as i popped the hood.
Out of warranty I'm afraid.. I guess LR don't provide more than 3 years on their engines either?
Out of curiosity; anyone know the price of a new TDV6?
